Casino Royale - ****

You know, I keep recommending Daniel Craig's earlier movie, Layer Cake. But when I look back at my own "review" of it, I see I only gave it one star. Buzz killed it for me. Yet, I own it on DVD and watch it now and again. I guess it holds up well.

I'm not so sure that Casino Royale will hold up so well over time. That said, let me clarify that I really really liked the movie. I saw it in an actual movie theater too! (wow, shocking I know).

I loved the new direction of the franchise, I liked how they were going to blow up something in Miami (yeah, no one likes Florida), I liked the darkness, I liked Judi Dench, I liked Eva Green. In fact, there was little I didn't like.

The only negatives I can think of were surrounding the poker game. But then again, I'm a bit of a poker nerd. There was also a bit of a suspension of disbelief problem with LeChiffre's portfolio management style too, but then again, if I were to believe that, I could believe the rest of the movie.

I'm going to give it four stars, which is a lot coming from me. Go check it out. And try to see it in the movie theater.

Quick DVD Roundup 12/31

Well, it's the end of the year. I didn't manage to increase my movie theater attendance since I whined about it in my last post. I did go one time over the Xmas break, but you'll read about that in the next post. Anyway, here's the last DVD Roundup of the year:

My Netflix queue gets backed up sometimes. Backed up in the sense that I sit on some movies. I try to keep my queue balanced between my typical mix of new-releases (action), foreign, art and documentaries. Depending on my mood, I'll skip over some movies, or they just sit on my shelf while I watch movies around them. Eventually I'll get to them though, but sometimes it makes the order at home pretty interesting. That's what happened this month.

One Day in September - ***

A quick documentary, wait, that's an oxymoron- a 94 minute documentary about the 1972 Munich Olympics, where Palestinian terrorists took Israeli athletes hostage. The movie uses current interviews but relies heavily on the actual news footage from 1972. The interesting bits were when they would use the current interviews from people involved in the various episodes to explain what had happened in the past. I don't want to ruin the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it, but let's just say Germany was way f'd up. A good 4 star recommendation from me, mostly due to the fact that the movie stays focused just on the event, not the lead-up or aftermath (although they mention it before the end credits). There's a lot of information that I never knew about, and I bet you didn't either. Go check it out.

Munich - *

Yeah, I obviously didn't like this movie too much at all. It's too bad too, it has a great cast and a good story. My main problem with it was that I thought it was over-acted. Bana was really good (but he's never bad), as the team-leader. His team was great too, although it's a bit of a stretch to accept Daniel Craig as a member of the tribe- but he's a good enough actor that I let it go. Hrm, now that I'm rambling I think I liked everyone's performance except Geoffrey Rush's. He's so good though that I was willing to let his over-the-top stuff go. (His character's lines about the receipts and getting the contact's names were annoying, and really bugged me for some reason).

So I guess I'm contradicting myself- it's not over-acted, it's a great cast and they do a good job. Maybe it's because I watched this right after the other documentary. Or perhaps the movie gets weird about halfway through when instead of focusing on the heist-type events and their possible repurcusions (which, to be fair, they get to at various points in the movie), they start focusing on "daddy-issues" with the Louis/Papa subplots and Avner's baby. Sure, they're interesting, but it's a bit ham-handed. Err, I didn't mean that in a kosher-pun-offensive way. It's a bit thick. And what the hell, how come they didn't beat the crap out of Louis after what happened in the safe-house? Sure, he was their best informant but sheesh . . .

Anyway, this is supposed to be a quick movie "review" so I'll cut it short. Munich could have been edited down a bit. It loses it's focus and subtlety. I think that's been my main problem with it.

Gerald Ford, RIP

ford Normally I wouldn't have anything to say about Gerald Ford on my blog. But as it's tamale season, and I'm finishing the last of my Chanukkah tamales, I remembered the tie-in.

People not from San Antonio might not know this story, but in 1976, he was running against Reagan in the Repub primary, and during a campaign stop in San Antonio (near the Alamo), was presented a plate of yummy tamales (or at least one tamale, I'm not sure). As he was a yankee from Michigan, he picked it up and tried to eat it-- still in the husk.

Although a minor gaffe, people still talk about it today. People even debate the significance of the tamale husk and the "latino vote" in political columns and articles.

So the lesson is, eat more tamales- just be sure to shuck 'em first you mother shuckers!

Convergence

I meant to write about something that had been bugging me but work's been keeping me preoccupied. I was just reminded so I thought I'd jot down the thoughts before I forgot again.

I'm a bit bugged that three points have come together in a disturbing fashion:

The fact that the N64 Kid is in a car ad doesn't bug me, the fact that I immediately recognize the kid from YTMND.com does. Man, I'm a nerd. What? You don't know what YTMND.com is? It's pointless giggly fun.

The fact that I giggle and tear up while watching some of them just reminds me how nerdy I am. Stupid net cliches, but I love them.

Links: History | N64 kid search

What's wrong with that? Nothing really, other people have complained about Lyman selling out. But what freaks me out is that hearing Lyman's voice makes me poop my pants, almost instantly.

I have a pavlovian reaction to his voice. To me, it means, what I'm telling you is very important, hard-hitting news and you should pay attention. Watching Frontline does that to you. You hear Lyman, you think your constituitional rights have gone away or someone was just shot.

Frontline can be scary enough to make you poop your pants. Ergo, watch Frontline, hear Lyman- watch Frontline, poop your pants- hear Lyman, pants are choc full 'o pooh.

So to combine his voice with the image of the N64 kids confuses me. I now laugh THEN poop my pants.

In fact, people complained about Lyman "selling out" long ago. I don't think he sold out. He has a great voice. Actors need work when they can get it. Check out his website link above.

Well, that's what I meant to tell you about, my faithful readers. Now go kill time watching some YTMND.com things. I highly recommend Cosby Bebop, The Once and Future King. (let the boy try!!), and the ubiquitous Set Phasers to Rock.

Just remember to put on your headphones. And your diapers.

Xmas Break?

As I sit here eating my Chanukkah pork tamales (does that make me a bad Jew?) I was thinking about the big holiday break. Not that I get much of a break, but here's what I want to do over the holidays, as I won't be heading to Texas:

Achievable goals, no?

Crazy Month

Here's a copy of an email I sent to some friends talking about the soccer craziness this month. . . .

I don't know if any of you have been keeping up w/ soccer news this month, but crazy cool stuff has been going on.

4 items. [If you're bored skip to #3 and #4 for the youtube links.]

1. US Soccer Men's National Team
Klinsmann didn't take the US job. Sucks for US. Bradley's decent, but Juergen would've been cooler.
google news 1
google news 2

2. Boca f'd up in Argentina today.
Basically, they had been doing really well all season. They canned their original coach early in the season (their latest run of coaches has been bad- one of the last ones spit on a Chivas player during a game in a tourney). They got La Volpe to come in and take over coaching- (he's fun to listen to coached the Mex national team, used to get in trouble for smoking on the sidelines) . . . Anyway, Boca had been at the top of the table and had stuff wrapped up w/ 4 games left in the season.

The upstart team, Estudiantes, who got Diego "simian" Simeone to take over as coach, had been on a tear all year, and actually caught up to Boca in the points. Boca didn't win or tie their last three or four games. . . Estudiantes won theirs, forcing a rare playoff final game today.

Boca went up early and then sat back. There was a fight later, both teams had to play most of the 2nd down a man. Estudiantes ties it off a penalty. Then they won the game (and the Argentine season) on their 2nd goal, which was a crazy, kickass goal (no video on youtube yet, but I'll pass it along when I see it on youtube tomorrow).
EDIT: The vid's up here -- the replay of the goal starts at 41 seconds.

3. Ronaldinho vs Villareal in the Spanish league.
The mother effer pulls off a "chilena" Don't know what a Chilena is? Well, it's when you score a goal like this: youtube 1

4. Ronaldinho vs Werder Bremen in the UEFA Champion League
Barca gets a penalty shot. Ronaldinho goes to set up the shot. Looks around a lot at his teammates. Everyone thinks he's going to bend it in the far upper corner. But he basically runs at the ball, let's all the defenders jump up, and he side-taps it under the wall and in, making Werder look like Colonel Klink. youtube 2

Peter Boyle, RIP

Peter was in one of my favorite movies of all time, Young Frankenstein. :(

Via NYT:

In 1974, Mr. Boyle made a memorable impression in Mel Brooks.s .Young Frankenstein,. in which he played the bumbling monster brought to life by the addled grandson (Gene Wilder) of the original Dr. Frankenstein. In one high point, Mr. Boyle.s monster, decked out in white tie and tails à la Fred Astaire, performed a nifty soft-shoe routine with Mr. Wilder while bellowing out the lyrics of .Puttin. On the Ritz..

More Pics

Tagged as: , ,

I put up a good chunk of pics today. They're in this subfolder in the pics section on the site. There are subfolders in some of them so be sure to explore around.

Starting later this week, I'll post some notes on where we went and what we did as well.

I should have more pics later this week too because Jodi didn't get all her pics off her camera, just some Chilean pics. So hopefully I'll have more Polo pics and pics from La Cabrera and Rigoletto, where we went for Thanksgiving. And hopefully the ubiquitous mate pics.

Thanks again Jodi and Gretchen for letting me have copies of your pics.

San Franciscans Whine Again

@!$#!#@$%

People complained about the scented bus ads here. There were supposed to be up for a month.

Representatives from the California Milk Processor Board, which was behind the ads, said complaints were from groups that are trying to ban all public scents, anti-obesity organizations, diabetes organizations and homeless advocates who argued the smell would leave them hungry and unable to purchase food.

More info here and here.

Here's one from Zapallar, Chile:

And two from Gretchen's camera that she emailed me this morning of us in Argentina:

I'm Back

I'm back from Chile and Argentina. I had a great time on vacation. I think Jodi and Gretchen had fun too, at least they told me they did.

Pics will be up during the week along with blog posts. My camera died during the trip, so I only have a few to add on Monday. Jodi and Gretchen let me use their cameras though, so whenever I get copies of their pics, I'll put them up too. Hopefully it won't be too long to get the copies, there are some good ones in there. . .

One other thing, coming back from Summer to a cold and wintery SF sucks. I was sunburned from the beach on Thurs, now I'm wearing a sweater. I'll just have to suck it up and sip my mate.

Very Cussler-esque

This is a crazy news story. (There are cool pics there)

A YACHT sailing out of Vava'u motored into a strange "sea of stone" on August 12, and the following day its crew became possibly the first people to witness the birth of a new volcanic island that has been forming in Tonga.

The Maiken (the yacht) has it's own blog with the full post here. Those pics are nuts. I don't know if I could sail like that- seems too isolating, but maybe that's the draw.

JV Won, But Shakira Won More

Marc reminded me that the Latin Grammys were last night. I didn't see them though. According to the news sites Shakira won a lot of shit. Julieta did win Best Alternative Album though for Limon y Sal. But from what I understand, that category is presented pre-telecast. So she won, but wasn't on tv. Oh well. Just a reminder - she is coming to the Filmore on the 19th. I'll be out of town, but you should go.

Up Yours *$

Uh oh, another kenny-rant. . . . Man, Starbucks pissed me off this morning. I was running early and thought I'd stop in at *$ to pick up one of those "buckets of joe" aka, their Coffee Traveler, for my team at work. The one closest to the office was out of the cardboard box things. The guys there are nice and said- we'll call the other place around the corner and tell them you're coming- and I said- that's fine if you can't (they were really busy) because I'm early and can wait.

So I truck it down to the one on the next block. Of course there's a huge line, and I wait. I get up to the front, tell the chickie pie that kenny pie wants a bucket o' joe. Her eyes get big and she says, I'll be right back. She walks to the back, gets a manager, points at me and mouths "he wants a traveler" (they're too far away for me to hear at this point. Oh, and they also have the heater set to 103F so the "barista boy" is sweating more than I do on my afternoon bus when I'm surrounded by cuties. The manager yells over and it's 103F, 10 blenders going, shitty music playing and 300 people jabbering- "sir, you want a travxxxx"? (I still can't hear her). I cup my hand to my ear and say "traveler? yeah, I want one". (they both stay by the back door) "Sir, it'll be about thirrxxxx" (I still can't hear because they both refuse to walk over) I ask "what?" and cup my hand to my ear again. "Sir, it'll be about thirty minutes."

30 Minutes? Good lord. I said, nevermind, thank you, I'll call next time. The manager yelled over something, but I still couldn't hear. She still wouldn't walk over (nor would the original cashier) so I left. Had I just walked to effing Peet's like I wanted to, I would've had coffee for the team. OR I should've just made an espresso for myself this morning since I was up early. Uggh.

Moral of the story, I'm either an old deaf man, or a 15 year old girl, depending on what I'm blogging about, Veronica Mars or how loud Starbucks is.

Clarification for Andreas

Andreas, I must've pulled a Kerry, lemme explain the joke-

The reason I wrote "damn foreigners" in the last post was due to comments on SF Gate that I meant to link to. I forgot to link, hence the odd comment.

Usually whenever the hard hitting SF Chronicle has an article about gangs or shootings or problems with something (Spare the Air Days, for example) there are always comments online that place the blame on people from Oakland or Richmond, or just the East Bay in general. Ya know, like Raiders fans. Yuck.

Sure enough, after the shooting story, there were comments like the following all over (some have been pulled):

SF_Native - what are you talking about? This problem has nothing to do with SF. It's the trash from the East Bay who come over and cause these problems.

I say shut off the Bay Bridge and BART for 24 hours and keep 'em out so that we can have a proper halloween to ourselves!

Posted By: El_Grande | November 01 2006 at 08:05 AM

Start an event in Oakland on MacArthur and one on Richmond Blvd in Richmond. Have Snopp Dogg perform. The Castro will be suddenly safe.

Posted By: sheleigirl | November 01 2006 at 08:56 AM

Anyway. . . . It's mildly amusing to see a "news site" open up the "articles" for comments.

Sick Day?

Wow, here's a weird way to be told to not show up for work- uh, don't come in, we had a bomb go off. See ya Thursday? Kthanks, bye. (Not *me*, my friends)

In other news, I think the neocons may have been right. If you allow gay marriage, you allow shootings? Only joking, that's not funny. It was probably East Bay riff-raff coming in. Damn foreigners. But that's a lot of shootings in one night in Angie's neighborhood.

Today apparently is Vegan Day. But I had never heard about that before, which makes it less known of a holiday than Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Continuing the news roundup, we turn to sports- Go Spurs! OU still sucks as do both the Niners and Raiders.

In fashion, now that it's winter, the ladies are bustin out the nice skirts and niiiiiice boots. Kenny likes. That is all.

Fall/Winter?

Well, I guess with the time change it's officially "winter" in SF. Dark early, a bit colder- and soon it shall start raining more. Ahh, fun.

Tomorrow my folks are off to Paris for the month. Yeah, the month. They rented an apartment so my dad could work remotely, although I think it'll be 90% vacation. Sure I'm jealous, but you know what? In a few weeks, I'll be going on vacation with Jodi and Gretchen to Chile and Argentina. So I can't be too jealous of my folks.

In other news, I've decided not to continue with First Friday Happy Hour. After a loooong time off, I started doing Tae Kwon Do again. So far my foot's holding up to the workouts and I'm enjoying getting used to a new school and the new schedule.

Part of that schedule is a Friday night class I really enjoy. Hence, the Happy Hour cancellation. I'll still arrange for a night out to The Bitter End now and again, but not as a regular event.

I forgot to update that I had added a few pictures from Paul's last grape stomp. It was a lot of fun just like the year before.

Unrelated to that, GrapeRadio has a good show (in mp3) format about the Wines of Chile. Some of you may like it, most of you will think it's too long. But hey, I like listening to it while I'm staring at the cuties on my bus commute. But after listening to it, I want to skip my workout and get to K & L and pick up some Casa Silva Carmenere. Quick DVD Roundup 10/19

You know what makes me sad? The fact that most of my movie "reviews" are DVDs. I used to go the actual theater all the time. Now I have to really think about when I went last.

There's stuff out now that I'd like to see in the theaters too. I even got some free tickets courtesy of my cool VP's, so maybe this trend will change. Anyway, here's your DVD roundup for the month. Once again, there are some that I watched that aren't worth mentioning because they sucked ass. The rest of these were the floaters in the toilet bowl of netflix.

The House of Flying Daggers - * Good lord, what a sappy melodramatic soap opera. You know what I'm getting sick of? Movies like this that are described as "sweeping epic dramas". That's a nice way of saying "A Soap Opera with a good enough budget to get a kick ass cinematographer and a hot chick."

Saw - 0 There's one star here because you get to see some of the main stars get hurt. It's enough to make you wish it really happened. On a side note, you know the guy stuck in the room with Cary Elwes? Yeah, he co-wrote the flick and cast himself. This movie sucks.

Deadwood Season 2 (episodes 1-3) - *** Ah, my love affair with the show continues. I'm just now at the part where Al's getting his kidney stone fixed. Ow. Hopefully the season will get better. I think after three episodes of Season 1 I was hooked more than I am on three of this season's.

Solaris - ** This is another movie that makes me glad I have the 3DMT™ I hated it while I was watching it, but was hooked for some reason. And I kept thinking about it over and over. It's filmed well, and has good acting. Granted, it's a bit self-aware in a Soderbergh way, but overall a nice flick. I almost gave it a three, but a character bugged me too much.

The Devil Wears Prada - *** I saw this on my flight to Chicago. It was surprisingly good. No, seriously. For reals. Meryl Streep is awesome. Of course you know how it's going to play out, but it still entertains. The only negative comment is - wtf, like we're supposed to believe the lovely Anne Hathaway is "chubby" at the start? (she supposedly slims down to fit in) Whatever. But like I said- surprisingly good. The only way it'd get more stars if I directed it and I called it - Anne Hathaway wears Prada, but leaves it on Kenny's floor when she comes over.

I hate the term podcast. But anyway, one of the ones I subscribe to has some 'programs' (episodes? shows?) of Hawai'ian music. I've been listening to them over and over to keep calm at work. Some of it reminds me of the old school country falsetto stuff. Check it out if you have time- and no, you don't need an ipod or itunes to hear them.

In unrelated news, Julieta Venegas will be at The Fillmore on Nov 19th. I'll be out of town, but you should go in my abscence.

Hey- I just wanted to apologize for those of you who've gotten my voicemail recently. For some reason, I didn't know you had called. Especially this weekend. I don't know what the deal is, but today I got on the bus and my phone beeped and said 'new voicemail'. Anyway, sorry. Hopefully I didn't miss out on any Nacho dinner invitations. :(

Musings on the LG

I don't have time for a full update today- I was in Chicago for a wedding and for some quality family time - and I'm busy at work. But something was on my mind yesterday on the plane . . .

I was thinking about the upcoming Latin Grammys. More specifically Shakira vs Julieta.

Shakira is nominated for a record 5 nominations. Julieta (Venegas) was nominated for 3 (I think) 4 nominations.

Everyone knows that I love Julieta despite her pop leanings. Shakira's just as poppy, but in a different way. But I think Shakira's going to edge her out in the awards, and not to knock "the hippy one", I think that's sad.

I still like Shakira, but not nearly as much as I did when she played her first Viña del Mar when she had black hair and played her own guitar. I stuck with her through Donde Jugaran. . . but her last double-album kinda bugged me a bit. It's not bad, but it's not that great. Maybe she lost me when she pretended to be a cat in her live show.

In the meantime, Julieta continues to grow on me and continues to play a lot of instruments on her own albums, and other artists' as well. I guess I think JV should be getting more recognition, but I'm predicting wins for Shakira. The Grammys favor album sales anyway and I think Shakira sells more worldwide (including the English market), which is ironic as it affects the Latin (Spanish-language) awards.

Stefania Wines

Although not early for some people, at a very early 10am on Saturday, I met Paul and some other friends down at Crushpad to do a barrel tasting of Paul's wines. I added some pics to the pics section here.

In case you haven't heard of Crushpad, it's pretty interesting. Their site is here, but if you have time, I'd recommend listening to the GrapeRadio podcast where they talk about urban wineries. Yeah, it's a bit of a time commitment, but it's pretty interesting.

For those of you in a hurry in a nutshell- Crushpad is the kind of place where you and your friends (or just you if you have a lot of $$) can make wine. You can be as hands-off or on as you wish. Although, the more hands-on you want to be you'll need to know what the hell you're doing (like Paul).

For example, if I have 3 friends and we want a barrel of cabernet made, we can sign up with Crushpad and say, hey dudes, we want some "cab" and we want it from Dr Crane Vineyard or some other place. Also we want to be there when the grapes arrive to help sort and crush. But then afterwards, we want your staff to manage the barrels, topping off, and all that stuff. Oh, and then we want you to design labels for us, arrange bottling, and then arrange the liquor licensing because we're only keeping half of the bottles- then Crushpad can arrange that for you.

But on the other hand, people like Paul use Crushpad as well. Paul already has his grapes. Either from his yard, or clients, or one's he's sourced himself. But depending for whom he's making wine, he may run out of space or need equipment, or staff that's closer to the wine in case he can't tend to it while he's at his day job. So people like him use Crushpad to help out in the process. Anyway, on a stupid gloomy Saturday I went down there to start tasting some vino. I was a bit wary at first - I thought drinking that early would ruin my Saturday, but that wasn't the case. Besides, I shouldn't complain about it being early. Paul had been up since five am for another harvest.

We tasted Cabernet from Uvas Creek that Paul has in two different barrels. The two barrels are either different ages or percentages of new/old oak. They'll be blended later. Quite nice.

But my favorite was his syrah. I think it's from a place in Mendocino County, but I just realized I'm not sure if I should be blogging about where it's from. I'm lying obviously, I know exactly where it's from, as it's from the same place as one of my favorite wines. But I'll hold off on names for now.

Anyway, it was great stuff. Like his Cabernet, it's also split up into different barrels for different reasons to be blended later. All of it tasted great and was uniquely distinct. I'm really looking forward to getting some of this later.

I'd really recommend checking out Paul's Blog. It's quite interesting. His commercial site is up too.

Guys are a-holes

Something happened earlier this week and I can't get it out of my head.

I went to lunch with a coworker and as we were walking down the street we passed through a group of guys on the sidewalk. I could tell they had already been checking out the coworker, but as we walked by one whispered to her, "You're gorgeous." We kept walking and went to lunch but then talked about it later as I could tell it bugged her just a bit. Which then made it bug me. But it bugs me on two levels.

One is that, to be completely honest, is that I *think* about comments like that all the time. Anyone who's ridden the bus with me would know that. But I never say anything. Sheesh. That guy is ruining it for other guys.

C'mon, do you really think that saying "You're gorgeous" to some stranger on the street is going to have a result of her saying "Teee heee! You're right, let's go to a motel right now!! xoxoxo"? No, it's not. So shut up and do what I do- stalk in silence, then chat with Angie about it on IM the next day.

The other reason I kept thinking about this incident was that I didn't say what was on my mind because it would have been even creepier.

Instead of asking - "What'd that guy just say to you? -- What I was about to say was "What did Miggs just say to you? Multiple Miggs, in the next cell? He hissed at you. What did he say?".

But you know- quoting movies can be funny sometimes, but quoting movies with serial killer quotes is even creepier than the whole "you're gorgeous" guy.

Anyway, sometimes at work, I've been walking around saying "I'm gorgeous" under my breath to make a joke out of the whole thing. Unfortunately every time I've said it, some goober has overheard us and I'm sure they're thinking "did he just say "she's gorgeous"?" or "why is he talking to himself again?" Either way, I'm still creepy too.

Anyway, I thought I'd end the week with that little tale.

Kenneth addresses your comments

Angie sez: "your blog blows-- you really should invest in a blog that allows your pictures to be viewable without me clicking other shit. i really can't be bothered to click more than 2 times per blog."

Angie asks: dear god, isn't ITB over yet?

Hrm, it appears all the comments I have to address are from Angie. Oh well.

When you leave me comments in this post, tell me what you'd like me to write about next. I was thinking about posting a Cheap Vino bit for Angie and Shane. Suggestions are welcome.

FITG? No, FITB!

The fall season is upon us. Everywhere there are signs telling women to wear black pants, even horrible commercials telling women to express themselves for relief and self-expression.

Butt look at this woman. She's seen the ads with Audrey. She's standing right in front of five of them. Yet, she is the representative of true self-expression. You Go Girl!

Stabbed

A guy getting stabbed is sad and all . . . . BUT

The fight began when a friend of Albinder's tried to reserve an empty parking space for him as he drove to the Richmond District neighborhood for a private party at the club. A van with several men in it started to pull into the spot, and when Albinder's friend tried to shoo them away, the van nudged him twice, police said.

I can't say I haven't wanted to run over someone "guarding" an open parking space in SF.

Ipod

Just a quick follow up- I finally got my ipod from work. It was a 1G Nano, so I traded up for a 30G Video Ipod. I'm digging it so far. I'm still listening to a lot of podcasts, but I did that before - only on my desktop. Now I can at least listen to them on the bus. Speaking of the bus, I finally fit in now that I have an ipod. I used to be the only one on the 1BX without one. Thank God I conform now! Wheee. Now I just have to figure out when I can cheesify it with some vinyl decals.

Indian Summer WP

I was a bit worried after my lunchtime meeting. Christine gave me some scary news:

I think today was quite possibly the worst day ever to forget my cell phone on my desk while I went to lunch.
I seriously was distraught over it.

Stephen and I walked down the Embarcadero to Poncho Villa and I shit you not, the sea of white pants was on the verge of overwhelming.

Note to self: September 12, 2006: White Pants Plethora Day

I hadn't eaten yet, so I went out. Sure enough, she was right. Due to the nice weather, the WPR (white pants ratio) was high.

FYI- I went to Pancho Villa again, there was even a PV-WP in line.

Never Ending WP?

I was really worried that after Labor Day passed that the WPR (white pants ratio) would drop. But this morning, as I was waiting for the bus, I looked up from my book and saw a WP comin to my bus stop! I then looked to my right and saw another pair! Then on the same very bus- 4 more pair got on before we even got to the Presidio St. stop! 6 total!

I can't wait 'til winter.

Hefe Shame?

So last week I was really craving Hefeweisen. I have no idea why, but I was. Maybe it was the changing weather, or maybe work, or perhaps I'm pregnant and was just craving a beer. I even was joking with Marc about it on the phone when he called me and then made fun of the background noises on the bus. . .

Anyway- did I wind up getting some Hefe? Yeah, so finally on Thursday, I came home, got off the bus and went into the corner store. I got a six pack of Pyramid Apricot (feel free to make fun of me, but it's good). I realized I didn't have any cash on my (or enough) so I grabbed a bag of Kettle Chips to get over the minimum purchase for CC. The clerk wrapped up the beer in a brown bag (the bottles weren't sticking out or anything) and the chips in a plastic bag, and I was on my merry way to have 1 (one) beer at home later (once Asi Es La Vida came on @ 10pm).

So I'm walking down my street to get home and there's a guy walking up the street towards me with his toddler. The toddler's drooling and waddling as toddlers do but looks up and smiles at me. I smile back and nod my head at the dad and say hello. He says:

Chips and a six pack? I've been there before . . . (chuckle chuckle)

Umm, what the F?

I should've said something, but I didn't. I was so mad when I got home I put the beer up and promised myself I wouldn't have one until I calmed down. 30 minutes later I did my patented hand wave / breath exercise and then cracked open a smoooov Hefe.

Herradura

I really don't know what to make of the recent news about Herradura being bought by Brown-Forman Group (makers of Jack Daniels). I think it could bring the tequila some well-deserved recognition in the US, but it could hurt it's perception in Mexico. And I have no idea about the pricing and if it'll be more expensive. --In case you didn't know, it's my favorite tequila.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Drinks group Brown-Forman Corp. (BFa.N: Quote, Profile, Research) is expected to announce a deal to buy the business of Tequila Herradura SA, which makes two of Mexico's leading tequila brands, for about $875 million, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

Citing people familiar with the deal, the Journal said a deal would give Brown-Forman, which owns Jack Daniel's Tennessee whiskey, Southern Comfort whiskey and Finlandia vodka, greater access to one of the fastest-growing categories of liquor in the United States.

The Journal said Herradura, owned by the Roma family of Guadalajara, Mexico, owns two leading Mexican tequilas, Herradura and el Jimador.

SBC Sucks Pt3

As we all know, I hate SBC (1 2). Well, I still hate them.

On Friday my DSL line went down, so I opened up a trouble ticket through Speakeasy to have them look into it. They did some troubleshooting and said there was 0db noise on that line now . . . odd.

Odd indeed- so I looked downstairs at the phone junction boxes for the apartment building. It looks like a tech may have messed with one when/if one came out to hook up phone service for the new person who's moving in to an aparment downstairs. Sucks.

So now I need to be home tomorrow morning while a tech comes out to check it out. Hopefully it's a Covad tech and not a SBC/Pacbelltard. Uggh.

I'm not a happy camper w/o my 'net!

Speaking of happy, HAPPY HOUR IS FRIDAY. Bitter End on Clement @ 5th/6th Ave. See ya there.

ITB explained

Via Bryan. . . who got me started on this

Ok so ya "White Pants".

I have a friend who does work for me and one day at the office he walks up to me and says "you know about girls that wear white pants right"?

Not knowing what the hell he was talking about I inquired. He says if a girl is wearing white pants it means they take it "in the butt"(ITB).

So I chuckled about it and the day continued. We headed to lunch and low and behold white pants everywhere! That's when it gets funny; you cannot ever get it out of your head.

And so now I have spread this as much as I can and it seems to be viral, the bay area is now infected (thanks Kenneth). I have heard many stories about it too which is great because they usually involve someone's mom or any other awkward situation you might think of.

Oh and if a guy is wearing white pants and you tell him this there is a good chance you will never see those pants again unless oh never mind.

Normally I hate Steely Dan. But lately the duo has been pretty damn funny. They've sent out two funny press releases recently. The second one is here and is for Wes Anderson.

(on removing stuff from soundtracks)
Same thing for the mandolins and the twelve-string stuff and the harpsichord, they're out. You yourself may be partial to those particular instruments. We're not. Remember, we saw .Tom Jones. in its original theatrical release when we were still in high school, we had to listen to .Walk Away Renee. all through college and we fucking opened for Roger McGuinn in the seventies, so all that "jingle-jangle morning" shit is no big thrill for us, OK?

S^3 Again

Well, I said I would write more about S^3, (aka the Super Secret Sushi Place), after my last trip there a week ago with Bryan. But you know what? I think I'm diluting it's magic by talking about it. Sure it's damn good. Sure I'll tell you where it is - although I prefer to go there and show you in person- although a lot of people know where it is already. But anyway- the point is, I don't have much to add. It's still damn good. I'm more interested in figuring out what the old rule #3 was. So, let's have a contest to "guess" what it was, and I'll go by there and try to see if I can read the sign through the tape.

Let's keep the comments in this post, even though the other post was starting to get some guesses: "Don't talk about sushi club" (Bartopolis) and "No Vomiting Allowed" (CoryAnonymous).

By the way, I'm starting to feel a bit guilty that I never post about Chin's sushi- I go there about 50 times as much as the s^3p.

The pics are all up on my flickr account, under the s3 tag.

Although unrelated, I did get to go to Burma Superstar again recently. I hadn't been there in forever. I usually pass it up in order to go to my beloved Q because the lines are so long. But as Bryan was here, we wound up staying in line - or having beer across the street- until we finally got in before they closed for the night. And you know what? Worth the wait!

I'm a cheater

Tagged as: , ,

Well, I try not to blog about work too much as you know. Doing so can go bad in so many ways. Maybe it's gossip about the hotties, maybe it's whining about a boss, or worse- complaining about the product. One of those things always does in a "company blogger". In addition, the last thing I want to deal with is chasing down some goofball's rant against our work product because his 18 year old cousin messed up a survey on MySpace or something.

But I wanted to break my barely-there rule today because I found a kick ass plugin for firefox. Actually I didn't find it, it was recommended to me on an email list I'm on. The plugin's called Selenium-IDE. There's a link here on openqa.org.

Why do I care about a plugin? Well, normally I don't- but a Project Manager at work announced to the company that we were having an internal contest to win an iPod. He didn't write any real rules at all- which left it wide open for my group to, uhhh, test the limits of the survey tools, so to speak.

Anyway, I was well in the lead when the PM did something horrible. He emailed the company again telling them about the contest. You see, it turns out that no one reads the PM's emails. Well, they scan them, but not more than a paragraph or two. His original contest announcement wasn't well written. He found out the lack of interest in the contest and then shattered my chances by sending out a spreadsheet basically giving the staff a heads-up that I was kicking their asses. Uh oh, so then I had competition coming after me.

Then something bad happened. A woman on the fourth floor had a survey that was a bit out of control so I was asked to look in to it by other departments to make sure it was legit. This happens from time to time. Most are legit, but I've had a few people making weird surveys targeting weird markets. Long story that I don't want to get in here (see paragraph 1).

Anyway, this woman had 2500+ completes to my 390+ completes. But the DB and Ops guys said that 1900+ of them came from 1 ip. ONE ip! (actually 90% of the results were from two ips, neither were NAT'ed). Hey, I'm not insinuating that her boyfriend in the QA dept has access to load testing software, and is helping her . . . but I'll just leave it at that.

Oh I was mad then. I hadn't been doing QA automated stuff and was reserving that technique should I need it- much like The Last Starfighter saves his last Death Blossom.

Well kids, it was time for that. It was time for Selenium. I can bend the rules better than all of them! No one out-cheats me!

I highly recommend testing it out after watching the video here.

It's pretty easy to record a bunch of clicks and/or actions and have the system repeat them. For QA purposes only of course.

I'm a cheater, and I'm proud of it. I'd better win the ipod, or I'm going to close all of the other staff surveys and take my football home.

The sad thing is that I actually found some real bugs that I'll need to research. Uggh.

If anyone wants one of my basic html files to import into Selenium, let me know and I'll put them online. I didn't put them up anywhere because I don't want too much traffic hitting the work machines. Our submit buttons are weird though, so email me if you want more info.

Well, now they're using bagels to instruct people how to perform either oral sex or rim jobs (depending on the ad). Don't believe me? Check it out:

Gibson was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving early on Friday and was reported to have launched into a tirade against Jews, asking the arresting officer if he was a Jew and blaming the Jews for starting all wars.

The actor, who holds strong conservative Catholic religious and political views and whose father is a Holocaust denier, apologized on Saturday.

Now, you'll notice there are many things wrong about me from that first sentence. IRC buddies - sheesh Kenneth, you really *are* a dork. Plus "norweigian king of pop?!?!" Wtf?

Anyway, the latest hit from Denmark is this lame ass song called Boten Anna by a goofball named Basshunter. What's even LAMER is the song's about IRC thereby completing the dork circle once and for all- - euro style!

What's the point? The point is that Morten Abel is still the King that Basshunter can't overthrow. Here's Morten's hit "The Birmingham Ho", enjoy

Shantaram

My friend, Kristen, recently loaned me a book that she loved and thought I would like. It's called Shantaram and was written by Gregory Roberts. It's supposedly a roman a clef (presumably to change names?) and is based on Robert's real life. The premise is that the main character, an Australian, escapes from Prison and makes his way to Bombay where he can be anonymous although he falls in with the people there, and especially the underworld.

It's actually a good read and I read it pretty quickly despite it's hefty 956 pages. I'd recommend it to most of you- especially those of you looking for your next work of fiction for your wine drinkingbook club.

I'd actually like to know what some of you think about certain things, but I don't want to mention them here because of "spolers", etc.

There are also a lot of good quotes in the book. Some that I liked:

On whisky:

'After all, what is the point of a man returning from the dead, if it is not to drink strong spirits with his friends.'

'My dear friend, you can stand to eat a meal- if you must - and you can stand to make love - if you are able - but it is impossible to stand and drink whisky. It is the act of a barbarian. A man who stands up to drink a noble alcohol like whisky, in all but a toast to some noble thing or purpose, is a beast- a man who will stop at nothing.'

On fanatacism:

'Fanatacism is the opposite of love,' I said, recalling one of Khaderbhai's lectures. 'A wise man once told me-he's a Muslim, but the way- that he has more in common with a rational, reasonable-minded Jew than he does with a fanatic from his own religion. He has more in common with a rational, reasonable-minded Christian or Buddhist or Hindu than he does with a fanatic from his own religion. I agree with him, and I feel the same way. I also agree with Churchill, who once defined a fanatic as someone who won't change his mind, and can't change the subject.'

On love(?):

Didier, trying to warn me, trying to help me or save me, perhaps, had said once that nothing grieves more deeply or pathetically than one half of a great love that isn't meant to be.

Mmmm Q

Tagged as: ,

You know what I like? Clement St. I like being lazy on the weekends and going there just to wander. On Saturday, there were some Chinese Lion Dancers. On Sunday, there weren't a lot of people out (the heat?) and since Will was in town, we hit Q for the requisite Sunday breakfast of chilaquiles. Mmmm.

RIP Mako

Mako died. :( If you don't know him by name, you'd recognize his photo. For those of you who know the "What is best in life" speech from Conan memorized, then you'll know that Mako was the sorcerer in Conan. (note: Mako doesn't give the "What is best in life speech", Conan does- and it's not really a speech, just a credo.) Mako was in a ton of projects. . . . :(

In the comments, leave your favorite Mako role/movie.

PennAve

Patrick has PennAve up and running on one of his test boxes. Although I still haven't tried it on my ancient boxes, he has a demo site up and running. More info on this post

I tried to install f-spot on my main desktop, but I started down a dependency hell- well, more accurately, a hell of out-dated libraries. I really should get a new machine one of these days. . . I'll see if I can get Picasa running now that there's a Linux version out, but I bet I'll run into the same problems. We'll see. In the meantime I got my phone working so I can upload photos straight from the crappy phone camera to my flickr account.

More Stone

I found a video on youtube.com of me passing my kidney stone.

Actually, I hired an actor to play me. I have more back hair, of course.

Pirates of the Poop

Tagged as: ,

I'm a bit tired of movie headlines and the "news" it feeds to shows or newscasts about box office records. Like this week's news about Pirates of the Caribbean II-

It broke just about every box office record. In fact, it even did better than initially thought. Early estimates from Disney said that the film took in $132 million in its first three days of release across North America. The latest report from Variety brings the tally up to $135.6 million for the weekend. link

I don't want to hear about box office records anymore unless two things are done- or more appropriately two key stats are produced:

Without those two items, shows like Extra!(*) and ET should stfu about stuff. The stats would also be better for historical comparisons. Like Star Wars v Indiana Jones v Spiderman ticket comparisons.

*I should note I'm not as harsh on Extra! because I don't normally get it on my cable-less tv w/o adjusting the rabbit ears, oh and because I went to school with hostess Dayna Devon. Go Mules!

Since I'm rambling, I think the movie theaters should allow Fandango to do variable pricing as suggested here - it'll help offset some lame fandango service charges and maybe entice me to see more movies I wouldn't normally want to see.

SA readers: is there still the Nakoma $1 theater in SA? I can't remember

Sex and Lucia - ***

I was going to try to write a decent little review of this scorching Spanish flick starring Paz Vega. I was going to try to concentrate on the story, and how in a weak, remote way reminds me of Cortazar's Rayuela. But a quote on Rotten Tomatoes sums up the flick well:

Sex ironically has little to do with the story, which becomes something about how lame it is to try and evade your responsibilities and that you should never, ever, leave a large dog alone with a toddler. But never mind all that; the boobs are fantastic!

I guess that kind of sums it up.. . . It's a pretty good movie though.

The Stones

No, not the Rolling Stones. No, not Sly and the Family Stone. How about Sly Stallone punched me in the stones? How about Kenny's Kidney Stone(s)? Wheee!

So guess how I spent my Monday? That's right, in the hospital. Fun fun.

So basically I woke up at 5:30 thinking "ow mother#$%#$ I slept wrong, my back is killing me." I went to pee and thought- "hrm, that wasn't as fun as it norrmally was" and went back to bed. At 6am I woke up thinking, "shit, my back really hurts, I need to stretch," and got out of bed to do just that. I got some water and as I was stretching I thought- "hrm, this isn't like when I hurt my back at TKD those times. . .I don't think this is muscular. . ." I showered and as I was getting dressed, I thought hrm, I should have to pee again but I don't- and my insides feel funny!" The whole time my back (lower right side) was hurting more and more.

Btw, when I thought about peeing, I kept thinking in the voice of Ralph Wiggum. Is that wrong?

About this time I realized I should be getting to the Doc's office or the hospital soon. Oh, and I started barfing. Oh yeah, THAT'S, when I thought I should go. So off I went. . . .

I decided to call a cab, but none of the companies were picking up so I kept walking to California St to catch the 1 (which I missed) to take me to the ER on Cali and Cherry(?). Which, as it turns out is a Maternity-only ER. Good to know. But my doc's office is in the same bldg. He wasn't there yet even though it was after 9, so I decided to hightail it to the ER on Stanyan. I'll keep this part brief, but before I left I hit the bathroom for good measure becuase the walking seemed to have helped my back. But my pee pee, it was ochre. Fun fun. TMI! Now try to say "Ms Crabapple, my pee pee is ochre" in Ralph's voice. See, it is fun. Ochre's not normal, so I booked it to Stanyan.

The good people at the hospital on Stanyan were ready to see me- but there wasn't anyone nearly as hot as Heigl from Grey's Anatomy there. Shit, I would've settled for Meredith Grey at this point. . . but I digress.

They were pretty sure I had a kidney stone so they made me pee in a cup to do a urinalysis and hooked me up to an IV and gave me a full liter of saline and a pretty strong painkiller in the IV. I felt much better. Except for the waiting around.

Once the IV was done, they gave me a new toy--- a strainer! I can use it for ramen, or lemme put it this way, pasta or penis. I have to pee in a colander! I peed out most of the IV into . . ahhh, this is TMI. Anyway, no more ochre, back to normal.

Eventually they took out the IV lock thing, took some Xrays and gave me my prescriptions and sent me on my way. I feel muuuuch better now.

By the way- afternoon TV sucks. I really should get cable. . . .

Oh, and I called my mom too to tell her she was gonna be a grandmother as I was giving birth to a pet rock. But it may have already passed so I'm not sure I'll get any baby pics. I don't have a name yet, but I'm thinking Sandy Richard Schwartzman. Whatcha think? Too waspy? (yeah yeah, sandy dick, har har)

Italy v France

Tagged as:

The only way to get Cory and Marc to watch soccer is to have more action like this:
the BOOtiful game

Before the game I had planned a long rant about the worst thing about Italy being Italy fans. But I'm too mad to do even that. They won the game, and dare I say. . . deserved (?!) to win -especially after that asshead Zidane headbutted whatshisface. Maybe I'll write it anyway at some point. Uggh. What an annoying final. France's first goal was off a phantom penalty. (Italy wouldn't have been there either except for a phantom penalty off Australia). Italy's set-piece header was good though. Too bad Zidick's header later missed.

Oh, and why was the ref always in the way of the play action? Aren't they supposed to run zig-zags from opposite corners to stay out of the way, but still be able to see? The ref looked like a midfielder to me at times. . . .

Now I gotta put up with all the buttheads who suddenly became Italy fans (not real Italians btw but American "(psuedo)Italian" slash Italy fans) in the past two weeks and are dusting off their Bianchis and getting out their Italia '90 Tshirts. And we all know people like that- I don't want to name names but I can think of two of [name-erased]'s friends in particular-

These are the people who don't know that the dude's LAST name isn't Lucatoni. It's his full name- Luca Toni. It's not CARNIVALO, it's Cannavaro, etc. I could go on . . . but I'll stop. Like I said, Italy deserved to win.

Speaking of Carnival, if you ever want to have an obscure drinking game- Edgar and I made one up- whenever Macelo Balboa says "TOTti", drink. If you really want to be obscure, whenever Totti comes on the screen, spit on someone, or in your drink or in Marcelo Balboa's Kool Aid.

Okay, enough rambling about soccer. I just want to end on a positive note(s)- Deutschland?! Who knew? Good job Juergen. In spanish, Ghana is a misnomer. Zidane's always been a dick. Well, that's not positive but I can back it up. Oh, and my dad may have been right in how he picks teams, the ones with better food win (in his bracket at least). Although, that doesn't explain how England even made it into the tournament, or Germany made it so far . . .

Caltrain

Tagged as:

You can't have it both ways, or can you?

Caltrain's fast-running "baby bullet" service has been hailed for lifting the struggling commuter train service out of its dot-com bust doldrums.

Smaller stations on the Peninsula that are being bypassed by the bullet trains have actually lost riders steadily since the baby bullets arrived two years ago, as those riders flock to the bullet stations, according to annual passenger counts. [story]

I wish they had "the bullet" back when I was at CYBS. . .

Oh, read paragraph 7-- Calling themselves the Coalition to Expand Train Service
Good thing they didn't call themselves The Coalition to UNdo Town Skipping

Mmmm Steak

Talk about weird timing.. . .

While I was grilling T-bones down in Mountain View, my coworker Angela was in the Philipines and taking some lovely pics!

Check these out:

No, she didn't actually try it. I'm kinda bummed out. Maybe I should stop in Manila after my next India trip. Or maybe I should just drive down to Daly City. . .

In the meantime, I'll stick to steak and vino. . . (oh, and alfajores)

International Dreams

Tagged as: ,

On my bus ride to downtown every morning, I pass a restaurant sign that draws my attention. The first few times I saw it I thought, that's too good to be true. You see, it advertises an international food selection that while isn't healthy-sounding, does induce ye olde droole glandes to start pumping out spittle.

The International Food Court sign shows they serve not only Mexican food (which is a guaranteed thing to get me to try it), but Pho, Thai(!), Chinese(!), AND lumpia! It's a junk food lunch dream! The only problem is that when I usually pass by on the bus, the place looks closed. Not closed as in it's only 8:30am, but closed closed. So I never bothered walking all the way up there for lunch. Until yesterday.. . .

So Kevin and I make plans to meet for lunch. I walk to his office and we start walking to a place that he says has a lot of choices AND a bunch of wide screen tv's which will be showing World Cup games. I'm in! I tell him about this one place I want to try sometime that I see on the bus but that I thought it was closed and it seems too good to be true. . . He says- that's where we were going to go eat but that he calls it The Dungeon as it's underground. It turns out that The Dungeon has another entrance on
