Bah

Bah Humbug. I was busy at work today. Boo hoo.

Speaking of boo hoo- does this chick sound like a big whiner?

In other news- Patrick has a test site up for Tracks. Read about it here. Anyone use similar GTD software? What about GTD at all?

More Musings

Add this to the rules of life:

No pachinko machine should cost more than $200.

Is anyone watching the new novela "Asi Es La Vida"? Or is it just me? Hot ladies. . . great show so far. I'm having a tough time with the accents though- anyone know where they make the show? Colombia? Sounds Colombian but looks European in the sets sometimes. Very confusing.

I have some new movie (dvd) reviews coming up. I'll post them soon. Speaking of- does anyone want to meet me at the Embarcadero in the next few weeks to see "A Scanner Darkly"?

I also need to post some info about some new wines. . . I'll get on that. I'm spending too much time leaving snarky comments on Angie's blog though. . .

Shantaram

My friend, Kristen, recently loaned me a book that she loved and thought I would like. It's called Shantaram and was written by Gregory Roberts. It's supposedly a roman a clef (presumably to change names?) and is based on Robert's real life. The premise is that the main character, an Australian, escapes from Prison and makes his way to Bombay where he can be anonymous although he falls in with the people there, and especially the underworld.

It's actually a good read and I read it pretty quickly despite it's hefty 956 pages. I'd recommend it to most of you- especially those of you looking for your next work of fiction for your wine drinkingbook club.

I'd actually like to know what some of you think about certain things, but I don't want to mention them here because of "spolers", etc.

There are also a lot of good quotes in the book. Some that I liked:

On whisky:

'After all, what is the point of a man returning from the dead, if it is not to drink strong spirits with his friends.'

'My dear friend, you can stand to eat a meal- if you must - and you can stand to make love - if you are able - but it is impossible to stand and drink whisky. It is the act of a barbarian. A man who stands up to drink a noble alcohol like whisky, in all but a toast to some noble thing or purpose, is a beast- a man who will stop at nothing.'

On fanatacism:

'Fanatacism is the opposite of love,' I said, recalling one of Khaderbhai's lectures. 'A wise man once told me-he's a Muslim, but the way- that he has more in common with a rational, reasonable-minded Jew than he does with a fanatic from his own religion. He has more in common with a rational, reasonable-minded Christian or Buddhist or Hindu than he does with a fanatic from his own religion. I agree with him, and I feel the same way. I also agree with Churchill, who once defined a fanatic as someone who won't change his mind, and can't change the subject.'

On love(?):

Didier, trying to warn me, trying to help me or save me, perhaps, had said once that nothing grieves more deeply or pathetically than one half of a great love that isn't meant to be.

Mmmm Q

Tagged as: ,

You know what I like? Clement St. I like being lazy on the weekends and going there just to wander. On Saturday, there were some Chinese Lion Dancers. On Sunday, there weren't a lot of people out (the heat?) and since Will was in town, we hit Q for the requisite Sunday breakfast of chilaquiles. Mmmm.

RIP Mako

Mako died. :( If you don't know him by name, you'd recognize his photo. For those of you who know the "What is best in life" speech from Conan memorized, then you'll know that Mako was the sorcerer in Conan. (note: Mako doesn't give the "What is best in life speech", Conan does- and it's not really a speech, just a credo.) Mako was in a ton of projects. . . . :(

In the comments, leave your favorite Mako role/movie.

PennAve

Patrick has PennAve up and running on one of his test boxes. Although I still haven't tried it on my ancient boxes, he has a demo site up and running. More info on this post

I tried to install f-spot on my main desktop, but I started down a dependency hell- well, more accurately, a hell of out-dated libraries. I really should get a new machine one of these days. . . I'll see if I can get Picasa running now that there's a Linux version out, but I bet I'll run into the same problems. We'll see. In the meantime I got my phone working so I can upload photos straight from the crappy phone camera to my flickr account.

I found a video on youtube.com of me passing my kidney stone.

Actually, I hired an actor to play me. I have more back hair, of course.

Pirates of the Poop

Tagged as: ,

I'm a bit tired of movie headlines and the "news" it feeds to shows or newscasts about box office records. Like this week's news about Pirates of the Caribbean II-

It broke just about every box office record. In fact, it even did better than initially thought. Early estimates from Disney said that the film took in $132 million in its first three days of release across North America. The latest report from Variety brings the tally up to $135.6 million for the weekend. link

I don't want to hear about box office records anymore unless two things are done- or more appropriately two key stats are produced:

Without those two items, shows like Extra!(*) and ET should stfu about stuff. The stats would also be better for historical comparisons. Like Star Wars v Indiana Jones v Spiderman ticket comparisons.

*I should note I'm not as harsh on Extra! because I don't normally get it on my cable-less tv w/o adjusting the rabbit ears, oh and because I went to school with hostess Dayna Devon. Go Mules!

Since I'm rambling, I think the movie theaters should allow Fandango to do variable pricing as suggested here - it'll help offset some lame fandango service charges and maybe entice me to see more movies I wouldn't normally want to see.

SA readers: is there still the Nakoma $1 theater in SA? I can't remember

Sex and Lucia - ***

I was going to try to write a decent little review of this scorching Spanish flick starring Paz Vega. I was going to try to concentrate on the story, and how in a weak, remote way reminds me of Cortazar's Rayuela. But a quote on Rotten Tomatoes sums up the flick well:

Sex ironically has little to do with the story, which becomes something about how lame it is to try and evade your responsibilities and that you should never, ever, leave a large dog alone with a toddler. But never mind all that; the boobs are fantastic!

I guess that kind of sums it up.. . . It's a pretty good movie though.

The Stones

No, not the Rolling Stones. No, not Sly and the Family Stone. How about Sly Stallone punched me in the stones? How about Kenny's Kidney Stone(s)? Wheee!

So guess how I spent my Monday? That's right, in the hospital. Fun fun.

So basically I woke up at 5:30 thinking "ow mother#$%#$ I slept wrong, my back is killing me." I went to pee and thought- "hrm, that wasn't as fun as it norrmally was" and went back to bed. At 6am I woke up thinking, "shit, my back really hurts, I need to stretch," and got out of bed to do just that. I got some water and as I was stretching I thought- "hrm, this isn't like when I hurt my back at TKD those times. . .I don't think this is muscular. . ." I showered and as I was getting dressed, I thought hrm, I should have to pee again but I don't- and my insides feel funny!" The whole time my back (lower right side) was hurting more and more.

Btw, when I thought about peeing, I kept thinking in the voice of Ralph Wiggum. Is that wrong?

About this time I realized I should be getting to the Doc's office or the hospital soon. Oh, and I started barfing. Oh yeah, THAT'S, when I thought I should go. So off I went. . . .

I decided to call a cab, but none of the companies were picking up so I kept walking to California St to catch the 1 (which I missed) to take me to the ER on Cali and Cherry(?). Which, as it turns out is a Maternity-only ER. Good to know. But my doc's office is in the same bldg. He wasn't there yet even though it was after 9, so I decided to hightail it to the ER on Stanyan. I'll keep this part brief, but before I left I hit the bathroom for good measure becuase the walking seemed to have helped my back. But my pee pee, it was ochre. Fun fun. TMI! Now try to say "Ms Crabapple, my pee pee is ochre" in Ralph's voice. See, it is fun. Ochre's not normal, so I booked it to Stanyan.

The good people at the hospital on Stanyan were ready to see me- but there wasn't anyone nearly as hot as Heigl from Grey's Anatomy there. Shit, I would've settled for Meredith Grey at this point. . . but I digress.

They were pretty sure I had a kidney stone so they made me pee in a cup to do a urinalysis and hooked me up to an IV and gave me a full liter of saline and a pretty strong painkiller in the IV. I felt much better. Except for the waiting around.

Once the IV was done, they gave me a new toy--- a strainer! I can use it for ramen, or lemme put it this way, pasta or penis. I have to pee in a colander! I peed out most of the IV into . . ahhh, this is TMI. Anyway, no more ochre, back to normal.

Eventually they took out the IV lock thing, took some Xrays and gave me my prescriptions and sent me on my way. I feel muuuuch better now.

By the way- afternoon TV sucks. I really should get cable. . . .

Oh, and I called my mom too to tell her she was gonna be a grandmother as I was giving birth to a pet rock. But it may have already passed so I'm not sure I'll get any baby pics. I don't have a name yet, but I'm thinking Sandy Richard Schwartzman. Whatcha think? Too waspy? (yeah yeah, sandy dick, har har)

Italy v France

Tagged as:

The only way to get Cory and Marc to watch soccer is to have more action like this:
the BOOtiful game

Before the game I had planned a long rant about the worst thing about Italy being Italy fans. But I'm too mad to do even that. They won the game, and dare I say. . . deserved (?!) to win -especially after that asshead Zidane headbutted whatshisface. Maybe I'll write it anyway at some point. Uggh. What an annoying final. France's first goal was off a phantom penalty. (Italy wouldn't have been there either except for a phantom penalty off Australia). Italy's set-piece header was good though. Too bad Zidick's header later missed.

Oh, and why was the ref always in the way of the play action? Aren't they supposed to run zig-zags from opposite corners to stay out of the way, but still be able to see? The ref looked like a midfielder to me at times. . . .

Now I gotta put up with all the buttheads who suddenly became Italy fans (not real Italians btw but American "(psuedo)Italian" slash Italy fans) in the past two weeks and are dusting off their Bianchis and getting out their Italia '90 Tshirts. And we all know people like that- I don't want to name names but I can think of two of [name-erased]'s friends in particular-

These are the people who don't know that the dude's LAST name isn't Lucatoni. It's his full name- Luca Toni. It's not CARNIVALO, it's Cannavaro, etc. I could go on . . . but I'll stop. Like I said, Italy deserved to win.

Speaking of Carnival, if you ever want to have an obscure drinking game- Edgar and I made one up- whenever Macelo Balboa says "TOTti", drink. If you really want to be obscure, whenever Totti comes on the screen, spit on someone, or in your drink or in Marcelo Balboa's Kool Aid.

Okay, enough rambling about soccer. I just want to end on a positive note(s)- Deutschland?! Who knew? Good job Juergen. In spanish, Ghana is a misnomer. Zidane's always been a dick. Well, that's not positive but I can back it up. Oh, and my dad may have been right in how he picks teams, the ones with better food win (in his bracket at least). Although, that doesn't explain how England even made it into the tournament, or Germany made it so far . . .

Caltrain

Tagged as:

You can't have it both ways, or can you?

Caltrain's fast-running "baby bullet" service has been hailed for lifting the struggling commuter train service out of its dot-com bust doldrums.

Smaller stations on the Peninsula that are being bypassed by the bullet trains have actually lost riders steadily since the baby bullets arrived two years ago, as those riders flock to the bullet stations, according to annual passenger counts. [story]

I wish they had "the bullet" back when I was at CYBS. . .

Oh, read paragraph 7-- Calling themselves the Coalition to Expand Train Service
Good thing they didn't call themselves The Coalition to UNdo Town Skipping

Mmmm Steak

Talk about weird timing.. . .

While I was grilling T-bones down in Mountain View, my coworker Angela was in the Philipines and taking some lovely pics!

Check these out:

No, she didn't actually try it. I'm kinda bummed out. Maybe I should stop in Manila after my next India trip. Or maybe I should just drive down to Daly City. . .

In the meantime, I'll stick to steak and vino. . . (oh, and alfajores)
