SBC Sucks Pt3
As we all know, I hate SBC (1 2). Well, I still hate them. On Friday my DSL line went down, so I opened up a trouble ticket through Speakeasy to have them look into it. They did some troubleshooting and said there was 0db noise on that line now . . . odd. Odd indeed- so I looked downstairs at the phone junction boxes for the apartment building. It looks like a tech may have messed with one when/if one came out to hook up phone service for the new person who's moving in to an aparment downstairs. Sucks. So now I need to be home tomorrow morning while a tech comes out to check it out. Hopefully it's a Covad tech and not a SBC/Pacbelltard. Uggh. I'm not a happy camper w/o my 'net! Speaking of happy, HAPPY HOUR IS FRIDAY. Bitter End on Clement @ 5th/6th Ave. See ya there. 29 Aug 13:11 | /tech | 0 comment(s)

ITB explained

Ok so ya "White Pants".
I have a friend who does work for me and one day at the office he walks up to me and says "you know about girls that wear white pants right"?
Not knowing what the hell he was talking about I inquired. He says if a girl is wearing white pants it means they take it "in the butt"(ITB).
So I chuckled about it and the day continued. We headed to lunch and low and behold white pants everywhere! That's when it gets funny; you cannot ever get it out of your head.
And so now I have spread this as much as I can and it seems to be viral, the bay area is now infected (thanks Kenneth). I have heard many stories about it too which is great because they usually involve someone's mom or any other awkward situation you might think of.
Oh and if a guy is wearing white pants and you tell him this there is a good chance you will never see those pants again unless oh never mind.
ITB
Taken from the bus this morning! Two white pants in one frame!
Difficulty: 10, Originality: 9.
I giggled the rest of the way in to work. ITB!!

New Restaurant!!
I can't wait to go there when I go to India next. I hope Zagat's gives it a good review. I wonder what their specialties are. . . . I'll write a full report. . .
The only thing common is that he wanted to conquer the world by using force and I would like to do that by the food and service I provide.

I won!
I won! Although the PM decided to give out nano's to the people in 2nd and 3rd place too. The funny part is that the person who he thought was in third wasn't really. The DBA's had actually provided another name. Wheeeee. Maybe I should take this as a warning sign? Hrm, foreshadowing? Anyway, I'm still swamped with work, so the next update I have - once I finally getting around to posting something- will be another DVD roundup. Then I'll update the CSS and try to fix the headlines thing on the far right (where it reads "15 (or 10) most recent") which busted sometime recently. 23 Aug 12:22 | /tech | 2 comment(s)

One more time
Okay, I took your comments from here and made some changes. Helvetica's gone, link underlines are gone, background is white, font's a bit larger. CHECK IT OUT Better? Worse? Easier to read? Who the hell cares? Btw- work's been super busy so I haven't had time to write up much. Hopefully it'll be getting better soon. And no, I still haven't heard anything about my ipod. 21 Aug 22:19 | /tech | 4 comment(s)

Steely Effin' Dan
Normally I hate Steely Dan. But lately the duo has been pretty damn funny. They've sent out two funny press releases recently. The second one is here and is for Wes Anderson.

Same thing for the mandolins and the twelve-string stuff and the harpsichord, they're out. You yourself may be partial to those particular instruments. We're not. Remember, we saw .Tom Jones. in its original theatrical release when we were still in high school, we had to listen to .Walk Away Renee. all through college and we fucking opened for Roger McGuinn in the seventies, so all that "jingle-jangle morning" shit is no big thrill for us, OK?

New Stylesheet Needed
Is this annoying? I was thinking about changing the main aspects of the blog's css. No, I haven't validated it yet, so chill. I'm just wondering about the font in particular and the background colors after that. 15 Aug 18:35 | /tech | 7 comment(s)

S^3 Again
Well, I said I would write more about S^3, (aka the Super Secret Sushi Place), after my last trip there a week ago with Bryan. But you know what? I think I'm diluting it's magic by talking about it. Sure it's damn good. Sure I'll tell you where it is - although I prefer to go there and show you in person- although a lot of people know where it is already. But anyway- the point is, I don't have much to add. It's still damn good. I'm more interested in figuring out what the old rule #3 was. So, let's have a contest to "guess" what it was, and I'll go by there and try to see if I can read the sign through the tape. Let's keep the comments in this post, even though the other post was starting to get some guesses: "Don't talk about sushi club" (Bartopolis) and "No Vomiting Allowed" (

I'm a cheater
Well, I try not to blog about work too much as you know. Doing so can go bad in so many ways. Maybe it's gossip about the hotties, maybe it's whining about a boss, or worse- complaining about the product. One of those things always does in a "company blogger". In addition, the last thing I want to deal with is chasing down some goofball's rant against our work product because his 18 year old cousin messed up a survey on MySpace or something.
But I wanted to break my barely-there rule today because I found a kick ass plugin for firefox. Actually I didn't find it, it was recommended to me on an email list I'm on. The plugin's called Selenium-IDE. There's a link here on openqa.org.
Why do I care about a plugin? Well, normally I don't- but a Project Manager at work announced to the company that we were having an internal contest to win an iPod. He didn't write any real rules at all- which left it wide open for my group to, uhhh, test the limits of the survey tools, so to speak.
Anyway, I was well in the lead when the PM did something horrible. He emailed the company again telling them about the contest. You see, it turns out that no one reads the PM's emails. Well, they scan them, but not more than a paragraph or two. His original contest announcement wasn't well written. He found out the lack of interest in the contest and then shattered my chances by sending out a spreadsheet basically giving the staff a heads-up that I was kicking their asses. Uh oh, so then I had competition coming after me.
Then something bad happened. A woman on the fourth floor had a survey that was a bit out of control so I was asked to look in to it by other departments to make sure it was legit. This happens from time to time. Most are legit, but I've had a few people making weird surveys targeting weird markets. Long story that I don't want to get in here (see paragraph 1).
Anyway, this woman had 2500+ completes to my 390+ completes. But the DB and Ops guys said that 1900+ of them came from 1 ip. ONE ip! (actually 90% of the results were from two ips, neither were NAT'ed). Hey, I'm not insinuating that her boyfriend in the QA dept has access to load testing software, and is helping her . . . but I'll just leave it at that.
Oh I was mad then. I hadn't been doing QA automated stuff and was reserving that technique should I need it- much like The Last Starfighter saves his last Death Blossom.
Well kids, it was time for that. It was time for Selenium. I can bend the rules better than all of them! No one out-cheats me!
I highly recommend testing it out after watching the video here.
It's pretty easy to record a bunch of clicks and/or actions and have the system repeat them. For QA purposes only of course.
I'm a cheater, and I'm proud of it. I'd better win the ipod, or I'm going to close all of the other staff surveys and take my football home.
The sad thing is that I actually found some real bugs that I'll need to research. Uggh.
If anyone wants one of my basic html files to import into Selenium, let me know and I'll put them online. I didn't put them up anywhere because I don't want too much traffic hitting the work machines. Our submit buttons are weird though, so email me if you want more info.

Schmear much?
Is that schmear on your chin ? I keep seeing some gross pictures on bus stops. The recent ad campaign is for sex education. You know how they use bananas to show how to use condoms safely? Well, now they're using bagels to instruct people how to perform either oral sex or rim jobs (depending on the ad). Don't believe me? Check it out:
I'll try to get the other picture for comparison.
But really. . . that's a bit much. I don't want my kids seeing those ads in the gayborhood. Eek!
By the way- I'll give a prize to the person who writes a clever pun or tagline for the pic. Extra points if you manage to use the word "lox" in a rhyming lyric. . .

Mel, Mel. . .
I think this Fark headline sums it up:
Mel Gibson's blood alcohol level was just a .12 -- apparently the guy just needs a mild buzz before he starts singing "Heil to Der Fuhrer."
In case you missed the news:

Gibson was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving early on Friday and was reported to have launched into a tirade against Jews, asking the arresting officer if he was a Jew and blaming the Jews for starting all wars.
The actor, who holds strong conservative Catholic religious and political views and whose father is a Holocaust denier, apologized on Saturday.
Allo Fred!
Long story, but on irc about two years ago one of our Norweigian buddies was chatting about the "Norweigian King of Pop" and this goofy video he had out. We had found some goofy online wmv version of it and laughed about the "Wot? Fred?!" lines over and over. Now, you'll notice there are many things wrong about me from that first sentence. IRC buddies - sheesh Kenneth, you really *are* a dork. Plus "norweigian king of pop?!?!" Wtf? Anyway, the latest hit from Denmark is this lame ass song called Boten Anna by a goofball named Basshunter. What's even LAMER is the song's about IRC thereby completing the dork circle once and for all- - euro style! What's the point? The point is that Morten Abel is still the King that Basshunter can't overthrow. Here's Morten's hit "The Birmingham Ho", enjoy 01 Aug 11:18 | /humor | 1 comment(s)
