Weekly Wrapup And Some Links
It's a nice morning in San Francisco today. It's still a bit chillier than what I remember for most winters, but hey, that's okay. It's not raining, so I'm happy. And of course, I'll be in San Antonio this week so hopefully I'll stay in the sunshine. I was worried I was getting a cold but (knock on wood) I think I'm okay.
Granted, I'm still feeling the effects of a great laid-back Friday night over at Kenny's (the other Kenneth). He had a bunch of people over for wine and that boy pulls out some good stuff. There was a lot of good champagne and some great wines that I need to keep an eye out for (Sinister Hand, Malm?, Shady Lady, Don David Malbec). Plus they pulled out some nice older wines too. I was one of the few firmly camped out by the cheese and crackers.
Another great Bittman column: 101 Simple Appetizers in 20 mins or Less. I like the way the list is organized- "on bread/crackers", "on toothpicks", "on skewers", "finger foods".

28 Weeks Later - **
Yeah, yeah- I know, a cheesy, predictable zombie movie. But you know what? Even though you know how a ride at an amusement park ride ends, you still ride it for fun.
28 Weeks Later is predictable and fun. Even if you don't like fast zombies now and again you need to see a good zombie flick. It's not as good as it's predecessor, 28 Days Later, but it's still fun. One other note- watching a shaky-cam fast-zombie movie on your iPhone on the bus will make you want to hurl during action scenes.20 Dec 11:51 | /movies | 0 comment(s)

Cory almost sent me into a wild rage by sending me this link (http://tinyurl.com/23kjr6). As you'll notice when it opens on the KCBS site, the url has a misleading title: "http://www.kcbs.com/SF-Considers-a-Tax-on-Caffeine/1348719 ", it's actually the HFC they're after. More Twits and Tumbles
Jeff and Bart are funny. There's a rock in that tunnel. Anyway . . . I've been playing with Tumblr a bit more. It's a bit cooler than I gave it credit for originally. The sheer time-suckitude potential is huge. You can create channels for your friends, or group site (eg DMWT mail list) and incorporate your feeds from (or to) your own blog, Flickr, Twitter or Google Reader. Go signup, it's fun. Granted, one could just move away from all this and just focus on the functionality of del.icio.us has built in already for sharing links with groups. . . 12 Dec 14:52 | /tech | 2 comment(s)

Other than Todd, Chuck and Sarah, are any of the rest of you using Twitter or setting up a Tumblr blog/feed? Just curious. Now that I'm being a dork with the phone, I may integrate those sites' feeds with my blog more. What about GoodReads? OpenDNS Installed
Those of you (all 5) who use my tunnel may notice improved DNS resolution as I installed OpenDNS routing on ye olde home tunnel. Hopefully the network traffic won't be as ComcASStic, well, as far as DNS requests go. I'm a bit skeptical this will improve speed as other articles have mentioned. Most of my network woes come from bad packets on the network when I happen to be using a torrent client, which I rarely do during the day (1 2 3) but we'll see. I mostly did the change because I realized on machine on my network was querying speakeasy.net's DNS still (the old and better isp) and was slightly faster. 10 Dec 11:23 | /tech | 2 comment(s)

More on the iPhone
Apparently Angie has a higher opinion of my tech influence than I realize (and deserve). As I wrote, I won an iPhone at work and have replaced my old battered beast the Nokia. I've been a Nokia whore for a long time. I've loved the ones I've had and have tricked them out with blinking antennas and clear cases using parts from Japantown (or Ebay) in the past. Since I didn't pay for my iPhone, I didn't mind switching over, although as I said before I'm sure there will be things I would miss. I didn't frame that as "why the iPhone sucks/has problems" though. So here's my two week review--

The Green Machine Returns.
Cory will be ecstatic about this-
Last week, St. George Spirits of Alameda received the news that, after seven applications, the federal agency had approved its label, the final obstacle before going to market. On Monday, the small artisan distillery sold its token first bottle, becoming the only American company since 1912 to sell absinthe in the United States. Then the staff took a moment to celebrate.I'm not a fan of licorice or anise flavors, so I'll pass. Plus, I prefer the
"We made champagne and absinthe cocktails, which rapidly degenerated into just sipping absinthe out of the bottle with crazy straws," said Lance Winters, a 42-year-old master distiller at the seven-employee company. sfgate.com
"Look, absinthe is bad the way Jack Daniels is bad, the way Skyy Vodka is bad," says Lehrman. "The worst component is the alcohol. If you drink too much, something bad will happen."Or was it this one--
Even Oscar Wilde was quoted as saying "After the first glass, you see things as you wish they were. After the second, you see things as they are not. Finally you see things as they really are, which is the most horrible thing in the world."

The Double-Wide
Some good quotes in some articles forwarded to me- Although the woman who forwarded this article about SF parents to me was pointing out another line, I liked the vitriol directed at new moms
I forgot to mention the babies: it appears there are many of them. Commercial sidewalks in Noe Valley, Cole Valley, Hayes Valley, and beyond buzz with kitten-eyed freshies sucking the rubberized life out of pacifiers, frazzled mommies in yoga pants and camel toes pushing behemoth, double-wide prams ...I'm not a fan of the double-wide pram. Man, when we were kids, we had strollers made out of two pieces of aluminium tubing and lawnchair fabric. Whatever happened to those? Another article/post about how it may be a good idea to set your ringtone to your mom's voice because it'll grab your attention faster in a crowd. I'm not so sure though- Cherry Pink And Apple Blossom White is enough to get my attention on the bus. And to round things up- the best way to serve chocolate soft-serve ice cream. If I had two girlfriends, I'd take them for ice cream there- but they'd have to share. Two girls, one cup. 29 Nov 13:55 | /rants_and_raves | 2 comment(s)

SF Haters
Hrm, something seems a bit off here. I was checking posts on SFist.com and then saw this:
on Monday the FBI just awarded SF as the city with the largest reported number of hate crimes in 2006. According to Bay City News (via SF Crime):And the SF Chronicle reports that hate crimes dropped in '06:
With a population of approximately 746,000, had a total of 94 reported hate crime incidents in 2006, including 25 that were race-based, 20 religion-based, 38 based on sexual orientation and 11 based on ethnicity, according to the FBI's Hate Crime Statistics 2006 report.
The largest city in the Bay Area, San Jose, (much to our surprise) had a scant 29 reported hate crimes in 2006. And Oakland. Had two.
In San Francisco, sexual orientation bias was a factor in more 38 of the 94 cases, the FBI said. Twenty-five victims were targeted because of their race, the FBI said, 20 because of religion and 11 because of their ethnicity. That makes me wonder if SF is quick to categorize a crime as a hate crime. Is it a semantic argument, or something more substantial? 21 Nov 13:34 | /news | 3 comment(s)
Most Bay Area jurisdictions reported only one or two hate crimes in all of 2006, according to the FBI, though San Jose reported 29 incidents, up from 22 the year before. Oakland reported just two, compared with three in 2005.

That iPhone Ad With The Pilot
I thought that the iphone ad with the pilot was a bunch of hooey, but I don't leave the room like this Salon author does.
Apparently, it's already happening. On one of the frequent-flier blogs, an airline pilot writes that only moments after informing his passengers of a weather-related ground hold affecting their flight to Memphis, Tenn., he and his captain received a call from one of the flight attendants. Seems an iPhone-wielding customer in the back had a challenge. "Some guy with an iPhone says the weather is good," the flight attendant says, "and wants to know what the real reason is for the delay. Is something wrong with the plane?"
full article - decent read
"Usually, traffic delays to Newark aren't due to weather itself," says another dispatcher, with 12 years' experience at both regional and major airlines. "It's about volume. Looking at a radar map on an iPhone will not help your chances at getting an early release. That commercial is total B.S."Thanks for the url, Cojones 20 Nov 11:46 | /travel | 2 comment(s)

Angie Crack Corn, But We Don't Care
I haven't had a "good crack" post about Angie yet, and I'm overdue. I went with Angie to Delfina last week. I had never been. It was my turn to pick for the monthly dinner and I had picked Delfina. I really traded an earlier pick for it (like a NBA trade for one of her picks) because I had reservations about their reservations.
Just so you kids know, Angie and I meet once a month to gossip about you bishes. That's right. Get over it. We pick restaurants that we've bever been to and go. And we talk about you. Keep up the good work, we still have lots to talk about. Anyway- a looooooong time ago I wanted to go to Delfina as I heard it was good. I was a bit wary, after all it's a Mission place and we all know what baggage that brings. So I called to make a reservation for a few weeks out. I think my parents were coming to visit (this was years ago) and wanted Italian. They told me it'd take not two weeks to get a reservation, but two months. I said eff that and never went. So I thought I'd give it a try and convinced Angie to go- actually,... there's more to read here ...

More Crack- Baron's Meats
I had another "good crack" weekend. Cory, Kevin and I wound up going to Hangar One for a bit and also to a market in Alameda that had a great butcher so we could buy some flank steak. The butcher shop is Baron's Meats at the Alameda Marketplace. The owner/butcher is David and is really nice. His site has a list of "exclusive" products which helps make his counter worth seeking out. We tried some of that "exclusive" sausage too and I thought the Alameda Merguese was great. His prices are really reasonable too- especially compared to the nearest comparable butcher for me in SF: Bryan's, which I think is a bit pricey (but good). Baron's even does aged short loin too. As it says on the site:
Baron's Meat & Poultry is the only store in the area, which carries the entire short loin rather than steaks. We will age the entire cut for you and prepare steaks to your order at your convenience. Please ask for more details.Mmmm, I'd love a full loin in a fridge somewhere with my nametag on it- but alas, Alameda's a bit inconvenient for me.

Raves: Financial District
A while back, a friend pointed out an advantage of working downtown in the Financial District I would appreciate. He pointed out that on average, given average walking speeds, non-bank-holidays and other variable environment constants, that one will see a hot chick every two minutes on average. Now of course you will say, I bet Kenneth knew that- and I did- but after enhancing my friend's research, I can now happily add that if the time of day is between 8:32 and 9:05am OR 4:37 and 6:11pm you can change the timing to every 37 seconds. This is tremendous news, and a huge "performance increase". And no, you don't need to thank me for all my research time. The Week - Minor Rant
I have a love/hate relationship with the magazine, The Week. It's a magazine I get every Friday and it kind of recaps the week's news from other magazines and newspapers.
The reason I got a subscription to it was because it reminded me of this news service fax that Simon and Gary used to get from The Guardian when we lived in Mexico (I guess it let them stay in touch with Blighty).
But The Week isn't nearly as good as that old fax service was. I can't put my finger on it exactly, but there are three main things that bug me:

Rotten Neighbors?
This is a bit scary- but fun. I found Rotten Neighbor via The Raw Feed. I plugged in my own zip code and found there was an entry for my street! Fortunately it's not me. But the funny thing is- I've heard the same guy- hell, so has Angie and she's only been over twice!
Loud Motorcycle!Actually, what the guy does is he starts at the bottom of the hill, across from me, and starts to rev up his bike as he goes uphill on the sidewalk. Or sometimes when he leaves he'll do the same thing going down the sidewalk, almost to jumpstart his bike. But it's insanely loud and inevitably sets off 3 car alarms every time. But hey, at least my 'hood doesn't have a meth dealer, right? 08 Oct 13:45 | /tech | 1 comment(s)
Some guy parks his beat up green/orange motorcycle here. He is known to drive around the block between 11pm and 2am setting off car alarms. His bike is a very old Harley and makes a ton of noise. I don't have any problem with him driving during the day, but after 11pm, give it a rest! You don't have to drive full throttle through the neighborhood!
Although I'm just playing with the site because a friend asked me to log in (and then Angie added me as a friend), I was browsing around Facebook today. I saw Tessa on there and when I went to add her as a friend, it asked for two security words to make sure I'm not a bot script. Where's Ponch?
Where are Ponch and John when you need them? And wtf is up with traffic lately? Yesterday this guy narrowly missed me when he was running a red light. And Ponch and John did get him, so things are good. The guy didn't even see their lights to pull over (this was on 19th) so when I was pulling up next to him I honked and waved, then P&J hit their sirens to get him to pay attention. Yeah, I'm an ass, but that's ok. But the other night, I saw a nasty wreck in the middle of Stanyan and Fulton. I was going uphill and was #2 in line to take a left onto Fulton from Stanyan. There was a guy coming up the hill in the right lane (to cross and go on towards Geary) and as he was going through the intersection, a dude going East on Fulton full on ran the light and hit the back panel of the first dude, spinning his car around like Tony Hawk. Crazy stuff. No one was hurt, although I bet the spinee was feeling it the next day. And then as I was getting home and was looking for parking I saw a near miss! And this morning a ped almost got tagged by a bus! (The ped was asking for it though) And right after that an air-headed ho' from the Marina bus almost got tagged by a UPS van backing in to a driveway! What's going on people? Why all the near misses? You know what else was weird, there was a cute girl on the bus today (well, that's not news) and she had a short haircut that was cute with her red hair, even though her fake emo hipster boyfriend had the same haircut. But then I thought the girl looked like Eric Stoltz (seriously, a lot like him). And then I got creeped out like in a Tilda Swinton in Orlando meets the Crying Game kinda way. Ewww. I don't know which is more disturbing, the car wrecks or the Eric Stoltz girl. 04 Oct 17:17 | /random | 2 comment(s)

There's a story on the homepage about Lisa Wong, a restaurateur in SA. So I click the story link. note: I'm not going to mock the fact that this is the top story
The blurb before the first paragraph of the article states
This is the eighth in an occasional series about San Antonians who have changed the flavor of food in the city.

Thursday Thoughts
I'm not liking Comcast's network service. My traffic slows down randomly at various times of the day. I frequently wish I had stayed with Speakeasy.net and not gotten cable tv, shocking as that sounds (although I am getting used to watching soccer all the time again). K&L pointed out to me that only a few movies have gotten 5 asterisks from me. Well, 3 that I've blogged about. They were right, I thought there had been more: Kill Bil vol 2, Pan's Labyrinth and Children of Men. An email I sent to the DMWT list:

I'll never stop doing the play," Kerlon said. "They'll need to create a new law if they want me to stop."I need to finish decorating my place. I have a lot of wine I need to invite people over to drink. 20 Sep 18:12 | /general | 6 comment(s)
Some players say the move is disrespectful because it breaks soccer's unwritten code. They contend Kerlon uses the move to show off, not to score goals.
"It is a provocation. He may have to be sidelined for several years if he gets kicked in the face," said Emerson Leao, the former Brazil goalkeeper and current Atletico Mineiro coach. "I hope that never happens." story

The Infinite Restore Loop 2
Just a follow-up to my original post. I've fixed my ipod's screen and I'm as good as new. I got a new screen for my ipod from Ebay. The replacement screen cost about $4 or around $10 including shipping from Hong Kong. It came w/ a little plastic wedge stick thing that made opening the case back up a breeze.

Breakfast Tacos in NYC?
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one missing breakfast tacos. HT-blog has a post up about them.
Lots of New York restaurants offer breakfast burritos, but sadly, that.s not the same thing. They.re always in that overstuffed, football-sized Mission style, which, despite my having a hearty appetite, is just a bit much for breaking the fast. Not to mention, these can run you $7 to even $13, which is expensive for a quick, morning meal.I usually make them myself though. All weekend. All the time. Mmmm. I'd make them during the week too, but I keep oversleeping. Plus, I'm not really supposed to take food on the bus. . . . because we all know I'd be running out the door, tacos in hand. . . That blog is really well written. There's a recipe on there too if you're interested.

Alfred Peet, RIP
I can't believe I forgot to write about this:
Alfred Peet, 87, a Dutch tea trader who started the gourmet coffee craze in the United States with his rich, darkly roasted, high-altitude beans and taught the trade to the founders of Starbucks and sold them their first year's supply, died Aug. 29 at his home in Ashland, Ore. WP storyA true coffee pioneer- a lot of people don't realize how influential he was.
Coffee aficionados swear by Peet's, asserting that it is superior to mass-merchandised products. In 1971, when the three founders of Starbucks decided to open a gourmet coffee store in Seattle's Pike Place Market, they sought Mr. Peet. He insisted that they go to his store to learn about coffee before he would sell them a single bean. The trio became believers in the dark-roasting method Mr. Peet used, and even after they stopped buying beans from him, they followed the technique.

Balsamic Marinated Garlic
I'm not sure if this is the best way to do it, but here's how I made the marinated garlic last week
First, a note on garlic.
Normally I try to buy US garlic. No, not because I'm anti-Chinese or hate saving a little bit of money, but because I live just north of Gilroy, CA (which is south of San Jose for those not in CA). Gilroy is the garlic capital of the US. They even have a crazy garlic festival every year.
So why buy cheap garlic from China that's might have lost its flavor when shipped and just stick with the local stuff?
An exception to this was last week- I actually intended to buy cheap garlic- preferably a vat of the peeled cloves you see in the refrigerated section. But because I didn't write that on my grocery list, I bought bulbs of unpeeled garlic.

Thoughts on Soccer
Another reason that my dvd watching has slowed down a bit is due to watching more soccer. And I had a quick little thought while watching a pre-game and line up. Hrm, I got a 91, Cory got a lame 75 and yet somehow my folks' new place is a lowly 42 (near the river??! and King William? how is it that low). wtf am I talking about? Walk Score, check it out. I put in Angie & Mike's address and they get a near perfect 98?! I think my parks are better than theirs. I get Mountain Lake Park, the Presidio, GG Bridge, and GG Park. They get tranny hustlers sleeping in Dolores Park. . . whatever. From the site:
What does my score mean?Either way, fun to play with. 08 Aug 14:50 | /links | 3 comment(s)
Your Walk Score is a number between 0 and 100. The walkability of an address depends on how far you are comfortable walking.after all, everything is within walking distance if you have the time. Here are general guidelines for interpreting your score:
* 90 - 100 = Walkers' Paradise: Most errands can be accomplished on foot and many people get by without owning a car.
* 70 - 90 = Very Walkable: It's possible to get by without owning a car.
* 50 - 70 = Some Walkable Locations: Some stores and amenities are within walking distance, but many everyday trips still require a bike, public transportation, or car.
* 25 - 50 = Not Walkable: Only a few destinations are within easy walking range. For most errands, driving or public transportation is a must.

-Paint it Green: Driving to a meeting with BOCOG, the abbreviated shorthand for Beijing's 2008 Olympic organizing committee, correspondent Simon Montlake says the air pollution was so bad that visibility could be measured in terms of city blocks. Yet, when he interviewed Olympic officials for today's story (see story) they assured him there would be blue skies by the opening one year from today.
"It was unreal to be in this meeting and be told that everything is going to be clean and green," says Simon.
Still, he says that ultimately China will do whatever it takes to make it happen. Whether it means seeding clouds to create rain or shutting down industrial plants ahead of the games, China will pull out all the stops. "If it comes to [making the city] green, they'll paint it green, literally," says Simon.

Dear Jackass
Dear Jackass, Thank you for ruining my morning. I'm glad you decided that my old Honda Civic was an enticing enough target for you that you decided to break in to it. I hope you enjoy the mp3 cds that I burned. They contain random Argentinian songs and albums as well as other great hits from Latin America. My friends hate that music, but perhaps in the future we can bond over the vocal stylings of Vicentico and not worry about our friends making fun of our MBFM™. I'm sorry that you don't know how to drive a standard car. I could clearly see this morning that you tried to take my lovely old black civic, but the addition of a third pedal and a gearshift obviously threw you off your game. Touché for me. Perhaps you didn't have a stable enough home life and a father or mother figure to teach you how to drive a real car. I did, advantage me. But you didn't have to take out your lack of a life on the center console of the car when you stole the stereo. You're such an uneducated cunt that you didn't even realize the brackets which hold the stereo headset would easily release the head unit, letting you slip your bounty away and in turn, you with it out into the foggy Inner Richmond night. So now, not only do I have to replace a tiny rear window, am I not sure I can replace the head unit without replacing a huge section of my dashboard. If we ever meet, I've decided that I shall take out my frustration on your left knee or your nose. If I had the time I would use more resources to track you down --perhaps with the FasTrak you took from the glove compartment, or a discarded cigarette butt- but alas I do not have the time right now, so our meeting will have to be by chance. I look forward to that day. Thank you for your time, Kenneth S. 01 Aug 13:18 | /rants_and_raves | 6 comment(s)

Adios Señor Chapa
Damn, I just wrote about Teka and today Jeff sends me this: (via Express News - Bonnie Walker)
Family-run Teka Molino closes after 70 yearsMy Dad went to school with Arthur Chapa at Jefferson I think. RIP Beancups! The article does say that the San Pedro location (different owners) will continue on.
At 11 a.m. on June 29, Arthur Chapa began telling Teka Molino customers who'd come in for lunch that he was closing down his restaurant. Not next month, not next week, but at the end of that day.
"Some of the customers came back three times before we closed," Chapa said. "I had one lady come in and buy everything that was freezable -- $200 worth," he said. "A good customer."
The closure of Teka Molino at 2403 N. St. Mary's St. marks the end of a 70-year history in the restaurant business for the Chapa family.
Although asked by the Express-News, Arthur Chapa declined to share any of Teka Molino's recipes.

Ooops
I did something bad on Friday- I became what I hate. I was getting off the elevator after lunch and my cell was ringing. It was the new old landlord calling me back after 50 of my calls to him. So I picked up, started talking and went to our lobby and sat down and went over plans to meet up over the weekend to turn in keys. As I was talking I looked up and saw that the receptionist had a look on her face and I knew I did a boo boo. After the call she told me, "You know what's ironic- the fact that you of all people became the loud-cell-lobby-talker after we've both made fun of them or have been annoyed by them in the past." I apologized but I was still in shock too. It was all so unconcious . . . What's next? I start looking at Volvos and stop drinking caffeine for a bit? I want to get in the car, get some Big Red and take a roadtrip due South East to good ol' San Antonio and straight to Henry's, Rolando's, or that place on St Mary's next to Joey's that I've been to a million times for bean cups and forget the name of. . . mmm too many lunch options - Edit: Teka Molino (thanks Bryan) I'm gonna have to subscribe to the original poster's blog. Actually- if my parents don't fly out here soon, I'll be trying to go to SA for reals in August. We'll see. They taste best with homemade corn tortillas, but even if you use store-bought tortillas what you create will be far superior to pre-fab shells. And if you want to get really fancy, you can make that San Antonio specialty-puffy tacos. linkmmm

please support sidewalk cafes in san francisco! if this is truly a world-class city, why are we not allowed to enjoy our outdoor open spaces like this? ridiculous!
if you do write, please write soon. i believe they go before the board next week.

Table for 2 on the Patio?
I should make this a longer post or revisit it at a later date, but I don't have time right now. But I wanted to vent about how stupid San Francisco can be at times- especially the residents. Ever been to my favorite restaurant in SF? You know how
