Quick DVD Roundup 3/28

I mulled on what I wrote about yesterday. I won't be making any edits. I stand by what I wrote originally. If I want to raise a dvd's rating, I can do that after the fact in a separate post. Blah. Now that all that crap is out of the way, on to the movies. . .

Movie Corrections and other things

I'll be posting another lame DVD Roundup for you to mock later this week.

I've been getting crap from all ends about my choices of movies- and I just want to say- "bring it on, bitches!". That's what the comments are for! Leave your comments, don't just mock me on IM and IRC!.

Layer Cake and Sahara- Chuck C pointed out that I need to correct these ratings. Sahara should be a ** and Layer Cake at least ** (as I said here. I'll correct those ratings tonight.

Chuck's also pointing out that I can't honestly remember how I score movies. If he asked me what I scored something, it's always lower in my head than what I wrote. Biker Boyz **? Sideways needs to be downgraded to one * (I still stand by my acting comment, even though the movie was overrated).

I was looking at my stats this morning as I had some traffic coming in from SFGate.com, which I thought was a bit odd. Apparently I was mentioned in Mick LaSalle's blog. Well, I wasn't, but my "Mick LaSalle is Retarded" post was. I should watch my language. But I stand by my opinion that anyone who liked Bewitched is retarded.

nice quotes from IRC and IM (which I agree with in a way):
[Ahab]: i think you need to cleanse your movie palette

Kevin has a new blog up. He's training for an event which I think is mildly crazy, but you should check it out here. The event:

Swim Around the Rock 2007 - An elite open water swim competition On Saturday, May 26th 2007 Water World Swim will host the second annual round trip Alcatraz swim. This swim will be a challenge for fast swimmers requiring a very strategic race plan. The spectacular 3.25 mile course will include changing tides and fast currents around the Rock. Excellent open water preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

While not as cool as the good ol' TJ alarm, this is almost as cool. Cool, but stressful.

Can't read it? Here's a writeup

Randomness

I haven't had too many updates lately, I've been busy with work. I do have a DVDroundup in the works and some other techie kind of things to write about (especially one that Chuck reminded me about when we were talking about Mac users on the phone recently). . . .

I guess I could write a rambling update now (I'm waiting to test an upgrade/patch) . . .

I've been playing with getclicky.com's web stats to see how they differ from my own pre-installed webstats. So far, getclicky.com works pretty well. I haven't tested it with Ajax though to see if that affects indexing. . . But what I do know- people are really cruising for "tranny stories" according to the search referrals. That, and Frosty E Hardison is still a moron. I kinda like the site. I should add more stats, but I think I should just work on adding more content. . .

Angie stumped me on trivia the other day. It's kind of shocking, but she asked about a song I HATE. Click this to have it stuck in your head. For more annoying info, check the Wikipedia entry to realy learn a lot. It's almost as bad as Steely Dan.

I want to go see The Host at the Embarcadero . . .

That's all for now I guess. . .

Oh, one last thing, for those that have already seen 300.

300 - ***

Well, maybe that tranny story I told had some subliminal truth to it. Let's see how Sunday's events go together. I drove to the Castro to pick up Angie. We went to the movies to see 300. I had a Queen CD in my car stereo. Yeah, all three of those things go together (not that there's anything wrong with that. . . ).

I feel guilty that I wanted to give this 2 stars originally. But it's true. When I came out of the theater I was flying high thinking- oh, this will be four stars for sure. Either I need to see it again, or the 3DMT ™ has worked its magic.

The good: respects the source material; good acting; visually stunning; good stunts*; excellent sound (they had the sound cranked up at Daly City 20); entertaining. . . .

The bad: extremely predictable story and cliched bad guys

Notes: chicks will love this- tons of eye candy for the men; I of course lovedappreciated in an artistic way the nudity of the Oracle, the Queen and the few Persian dancers, except that Boxing Helena one. . . (aww who am I kidding, I'd still date her)

Is it worth seeing in the theater? Yeah, it is. Would I see it again? Sure. Do I have much more to add? Not really. A reluctant 3 asterisks.

Angie thinks it will go into semi-permanent rotation at the Castro Theater soon.

*For some reason, I dunno, maybe because of Tae Kwon Do, I really like movies that are shot like 300 where they slow down and speed up the stunts. 300 was filmed in 50fps I think (I could be wrong on this) and it was great how they could really slow down the action as a massive punch was landing or a spear was stabbing. But what impressed me was when they were fighting the bad guys, I wound up watching how the bad guys acted after they had been stabbed or hit (or lost limbs) really nice flips, spins and hard landings.

One other thing- Gerard Butler's assaccent was really distracting at times. When he was talking about Sparta, it reminded me of ME doing a horrible impression of Eddie Izzard impersonating Connery as Bond. "Ehr, Mish Moneypenny . . .Dish is Shparta!"

What is Wrong w/ Me?

Sometimes I wonder what the hell is wrong with me. The other day, I was walking along and heard that song by the Postal Service. You know which one I'm talking about. But when I heard the song I immediately wanted to punch someone in the face. And I mean hard. Fortunately no one was around and I kept walking. I think the tune must have emanated from a passing Volvo station wagon.

But then that night I saw that effing UPS ad again. Yeah, the one w/ the guy. Yeah, THAT guy. I saw the ad and I wanted to punch HIM in the face. And I mean hard. But I didn't want to hurt my (non cable, non HD, rabbit eared) TV. But man, if I see that guy . . .

That stupid ad brings up so much hatred in me that I think they should use it to build a pavlovian responding secret army. Right before battle, they show that ad (or play that song) and the soldiers would get so riled up they'd kill anything.

I started to look up information about that ad- and aside from one interesting blog post about how using the song from The Postal Service for the Real USPS's competitor, I only saw like-minded hatred, so I know I'm not alone. And this awesome parody on youtube:

But am I a secret psycho, or am I having a pavlovian reaction (Angie, don't answer this question).

one more

Focus and Sharpening

Tagged as: ,

Patrick (who I finally got to meet in person last week) posted an interesting thing today.

His post in interesting to me for a few reasons, mostly due to timeliness and one due to "stalking":

I've come to realize that I too had way too much information on my weblog. With a little digging it would be far too easy to find out my political views, lots of details about my wife, where I lived, or how I was feeling on certain days. All of that information is completely orthogonal to the purpose of this weblog and only puts me at risk ...

As most of my friends know, I have a bit of a knack for getting information like Patrick mentions, but I usually don't care about how it could affect me in reversed situations. I don't even give a second thought about what I post most of the time. Most of you know that already though - I make a ton of spelling and grammar errors. But what he mentions in his blog is more privacy-related. Not private as in don't talk about the fact that my brother had a white poop (see previous post) but big-P privacy.

The other point he brings up is keeping the blog focused on what it's intended them or point is. But as they say on IRC, ohnoez! Why oh no? Because it's obvious from my ramblings that I have no focus. This touches home for me because I've thought about this a lot, but not just for the blog. I honestly like writing scribbling about random stuff.

From the blog article counts I do stay semi-focused on what I do like, or the big three: Movies, Food & Drink, and Tech (article counts on the right sidebar). But then again, I still write about just general crap (with Travel) not far behind.

I guess what it comes down to is that I could be more focused. But at times I'm not sure that I should be.

side note for Bart and Jeff: Focus. Bofus?

Do any of you use Linked In? Let me rephrase the question. Do any of you use Linked In when you're not in the middle of a job search? Why? Just curious.

More On Basecamp

I think I figured out why Basecamp had some buzz going on. Not that this had a lot of thinking required, it's just been a while since I felt like being a nerd in this last post.

Basically, the buzz has to be coming from Mac users. Windows users in a enterprise level environment would have an IS/IT department giving them copies of MS Project and/or access to more development tools. Mac users, especially the ones I said are consultants or are in small offices, wouldn't be using these tools. So the blogger set would of course love this stuff and write about it.

Basecamp's not bad, but it's not that big a deal. (like any of you care anyway)

Farming

I helped Paul and Stef on Saturday pruning a vineyard. It was a lot of hard work. My arms and hands are still sore.

The work was the exact opposite of what people think "wine living" is. Most people have an image of "Oh, I'll buy a place in Napa/Sonoma/wherever, have a nice house, sit on the porch in the mornings, maybe wander my acre or two and do a bit of grape pruning. Ahh, yeah, that's it. Then I'll sit back on the rocking chair and wait for the wine."

Uh no. That's not it at all. You're gonna be doing back-breaking farming work. It ain't no picnic.

At least now I understand why when Paul has a wine tasting party, he has a ton of "volunteers". But when it's other "vineyard research", only a few show up. But hey, it's all in fun. I just went to learn how to prune and why one does it. Pretty interesting.

It took us quite a while to do about an acre. Sorry about the crappy phone pics.

More on the Pants

Tessa is brilliant- she found a pic of the exact combo I have so much hatred for. Behold:

Fugly combo that one.

Granted, if the girls on the bus showed theird midriffs like in that pic, I'd cut them more slack. (That's a pun btw, slacks, pants har har)

Oh, and Angie said that yesterday's post was the "gayest thing you have ever written". I disagree- I say it's very hetero as it shows that I look at the ladies maybe a bit too much.
