Who the Hell is Bob?

I've been talking about Bob a lot lately. Who the hell is Bob you may ask? Well, I'm not referring to a person, I've been referring to a thing- A B.O.B.

A BOB is a "bail out bag" or a "bug out bag". In CA they seem to say "bail" more, in TX, "bug out".

In a nutshell it's your bag that you have handy to GTFO out of somewhere especially if there's an emergency situation. Most of you know I already have a magic backpack, so it's not too far off for me to obsess about a 'bob'.

I think it was a few months back, I had this really weird dream about a 'quake in SF that involved me camping in the Presidio when I had to "bug out" for some reason in my apartment. Fortunately I had a lot of stuff in my 'magic backpack'.

But when I woke up, I thought of two things:
1) Why did I have a quake dream instead of a sex dream that involved hotties from the Financial District? Boo on that.

2) Hrm, my magic backpack doesn't have true emergency supplies. I should stock up.

Did I stock up? Nope. I even made a list of random stuff I should get. Most of the list is things you can imagine -- 1st aid kit, food, etc. And if you can't imagine it, you really need to look at 72hours.org. But did I buy anything?- not really. I bought a new flashlight and some better batteries and a water bottle.

And then Ike hit TX. Adam & Angie didn't have power for more than 3 weeks I think and were telling me stories that made me realize I need to get off my ass and get a Bob or kit together. This feeling of dread got worse after talking to Sam & Chuck about their deployment to the hurricane area (they're volunteer firefighters and have [encrypted] projects too).

Of course Sam & Chuck love to rub it in about CA and how I'll need to get back to TX asap if there's a real 'quake and we did talk about how SF would really be cut off (screwed). They also pointed out that a "real" bob should have a gun in it (which some other friends of mine who are cops agree on) but that the urban sites that are gov-sponsored don't really point that out. But that's another discussion.

So in the next few weeks, I'll try to finish getting my Bob together. There's really no excuse for not having a (real) 1st Aid kit in my apartment, so that will be the first item. I think I can wait a bit before ordering crates of MREs off eBay for a while. ;)

What about you? (Other than Marc,) Do you have a kit put together? Any of you taken a NERT class?

By the way- if you decide to research online what you need to put together- try to keep a level head with your linking. You're only a few clicks away from survivalist stuff and right after that is the NWO-types (tinfoil hat sites sometimes).

Actually, I have a funny story about Lasik that relates to this, I'll post that as the next story.
