I'm in a Bubble

You know, I realized something when I was driving around San Antonio and Austin this past weekend.

I realized I had never seen a McCain yard sign in SF. Okay, "window sign" since people here don't have front yards . . . . I have seen a few bumperstickers though

But when I was hanging out with Megan she told me she had seen a *Palin* sign in someone's yard. Correction- she had seen a few Palin signs in people's yards. I thought she was pulling my leg, so I made her show me and we drove to the location. Here's a video of it.

Note- in the vid we say it looks like a printout but we realized it was a vinyl sign when we got close. It's pink too- very Barbie. . . .

I doubt I'll see one in SF. . .

Know Your Limitations

I don't know why, but I was thinking of things that I cannot do, or cannot do well.

Obviously it's a short list:

1. Eat soup gracefully

2. Stay awake for a whole episode of CSI:Miami.
I swear that show knocks me out 10-15 mins into it- and then it's off to sweet sweet dreams of the white-pants-wearing Eva LaRue/Natalie Boa Vista).

3. Stop my inner snob when I'm out and about...

What's at the top of your list?

Babysitting

DustinI'm babysitting this weekend. You can see the kid in the pic to the left.

I also plan on being selfish too and using Dustin as a chick-magnet in the park.

Hey, he needs a place for the weekend, and I need his magnet-services. It's all fair, right?

So far, he's yet to barf, pee or poop on any of my stuff. So, so far, he's doing better than I am.

As an aside, he's a living alarm clock-- I forgot about that.

By Request

Dude snoring on the 5 Fulton So I've gotten a few requests for blog posts. I've narrowed down the best request themes and will start posting those categories this week.

The first category is an easy one, and I already do this. Basically it'll be the equivalent of "stories about SF that make Jim C glad he lives in Livermore".

The second category- and I've had many more requests for this- is to start putting up stories about the bus- or bus adventure posts. I'll be introducing those too.

The hard part for that 2nd category is getting pics to illustrate. I can get pics, I just don't want to get a restraining order if I take something too personal. I'll have to black-bar the eyes like on that show Angie watches about what not to wear. . . .

So later this week I'll introduce the terms, nicnames, stereotypes, and nomenclature used in my bus stories. The pic on the right doesn't need any explaining though- it speaks for itself.

SF Quote

I liked this quote from the Mayor of SF who was talking about his budget cuts, but I liked it in a wider sense:

"The reality outside our 47 1/2 square miles is very different from the reality within it," Newsom said.

from this column.

Friday Notes

Random stuff for Friday

Memorial Day Weekend is here. Break out the white pants! But not like this. (Thanks Bryan!) But then again, take some time to remember what Memorial Day is really for, and go punch a Nazi in the nuts.

Bittman has a piece up about broiling ribs in case it rains and you want to bbq. Looks like a decent recipe/method.

The Spurs are going to give me an ulcer. Game 2 Tonight v Lakers!

Lots of stuff online about the Santa Cruz Mountain Fires:
sfgate.com and a ton of links on Dave's site. It's not just bad for the wine obviously, but the people who live there. My peeps in Mountain View said they can smell smoke at their office.

Random tip of the day: keep your Google Reader in List view- helps you cruise through the posts much more quickly and drop the feeds you don't really read.

Ladbrokes & Hils

Why doesn't ladbrokes.com (or sites from vegas) have the odds or the line on when Hilary Clinton will give up? I'd like to put some cash down . . . (or at least see the odds). Surely someone has something . . .

meanwhile, (via KC) comes this

Also- and I'm being semi-serious in this "<p>" - there was a story back in '04 I think, in the NYT about how Hils and other Dems would snub Kerry in "huddles" on the Senate floor after his loss. Do you think the same thing's going to happen to her? (and yes, I'm still looking for the article)

Last IMIA Post

20040830 Wed - FINISHED! Aww yeah!!

It took me almost 2 hours of riding around after work to get the mileage I needed (I underestimated my planned route home), but I did it. Thanks again to Kevin for organizing this, and thanks to Pak for swimming for me.

Nice Long Run Tonight

Another cross-post from the IMIA page, but so what . . . I'll get back to blogging about movies, wine, and tech crap soon enough . .

20080428 Mon - Originally I was going to ride to work today, but I overslept (again, although just slightly) and realized I had a flat tire. So, I took the bus to work knowing I'd have to go on a jog when I got home.

Using Gmap Pedometer I plotted out some of my easier (flat) runs that were about 3 miles long. I thought about extending it a bit thinking, well, if I could get as close to 6 miles as possible it'd be great. But, I also knew that running close to 10k would blow my knees out.

I wound up deciding on a route to and through part of Golden Gate Park and back home. But during that jog, when I reached the point where I should have turned back I thought- "hrm . . . I should run all the way to the beach (or try at least) and then back up Fulton until my knees blow out, then I can take the bus home to 8th and walk from Fulton to Cali."

And for some reason, I actually did it. I was just glad I had my jacket on, because it was cold, windy and wet-foggy for at least half the run, but clearer towards the water. Sure enough, my knees were killing me by the time I got there and as I started to come up Fulton, I knew I could only go a few more blocks (to the next bus stop).

So, I hopped on the bus, got off at 8th, and then ran the additional .89 miles back to the apartment.

Here's the route I took. It's 4.89 miles, giving me a total of 5.78 miles for the day. That means I'm at 25.7 total.

Uggh, I'm short half a mile. I wish I had known that, I would've tried to go another half mile. I'll do it tomorrow or Wednesday depending on how my knees are.

btw- if you use gmap-pedometer in firefox, turn off adblock plus for that domain (if you use that plugin).
