Kevin gave me some bad news over the weekend. He told me that La Salle Cigars over in Oakland was closing soon. I don't have all the details- dispute with the landlord is the rumor - but they are closing down. It was one of the few places that had an area where you could smoke inside.
La Salle
is was nicer than most places too because they usually had a game on TV, and enough space to sit away from the game if you weren't interested. Oh, and more importantly- they had drinks - beer, wine and port.
This is the second shop in our area to close down in a year. Sherlock's Haven on Battery in the Financial District of SF last year, and now La Salle.
I only know of two other places that I wouldn't mind going to sit down and have a cigar. Correction- I know of four: Telford's in Mill Valley near my old office,
Grant's Tobacconists on Market Street, The Havana Lounge* (not sure if that name's right) in North Beach, and The Cigar Bar* on Pine. I'm sure I could think of a few more given some time.
The two places with the * are because they have particular setups. The Cigar Bar place on Pine you have to be a "member" of to get cigars from. Meh. And while I like the Havana Loung place in North Beach, it's more of a bar/restaurant and their humidor selection is decent, but not super. It's more a nice place to go have a drink after work and to take your own cigars to enjoy.
Telford's is probably the last of the big, nice stores up here- but it's semi-inconvenient for an after-work jaunt. Well, it's not for just me as I'm closer to the GG Bridge- but it would be a pain for my friends to meet me there.
There's also a decent place in Mountain View on Castro - but I've only been there once and didn't stay long, and a nice shop on The Alameda in San Jose, but I forgot the name (Mission Cigar Shop?).
I'm sure there are other places I forgot and I'll hear about it in the comments, but I'm kind of bummed out about La Salle- and I wasn't even that much of a regular! Uggh.
update 6/10- I must have written in a typical stupor because I had the name wrong for "Grant's Tobbacconits" or "Grant's San Francisco". I corrected it above. The other name that's wrong above should be corrected to "The
Cigar Bar & Restaurant" on Montgomery.
