The May 2007 Challenge
Lately I've felt like I've been in a rut. It's been going on for quite a while. (a loooong while). No, don't worry, not a depressive rut- nothing is "wrong" - work's great, life's great, but yet there's that stuck-in-a-rut feeling I get now and then.
Without making this too long an article, something I want to try is a month long challenge. I was going to keep it to myself, but I figured if I blogged about it, most of you would harass the ever living crap out of me and I may be able to use that fear as a motivating factor. Here's what I was thinking... and let me know what you think. My challenge for the month of May is to ride my bike to work (and home). One thing though- this would not count for on-call "emergencies" where I may need to get to work earlier than expected, or in the middle of the night. I think I need to set some more rules, so your comments will help. May 1st is next week. There are 22 business days in May. What do you think? Decent goal? Not thought out enough (as in what about rain days)? Updated- I know it's only 4.5-4.8 miles. But it is a difficult ride. Hell, sometimes it's a difficult walk, and I do that at least once a week when it's nice out. In fact, I did it today on the way home. The plan is to go sweatless on the way in to work (no showers). There's one hard hill near Japantown on the route I ride in. The way home is hard because when going West, you're going into the wind, and there are more hills. And yes, I do have the kick ass SF Bike Org's map with color coded streets indicating the steepness of the hills. I bought that when I got the bike because I'm lazy. And yes, I do think it's weird/funny that the SF bike map is color coded using shades of pink. Yes, I still hate Critical Massholes. They've delayed many of my commutes home -- since I moved here in 99 and drove, til now, blocking my bus. Uggh23 Apr 22:31 | /general | 10 comment(s)

on rain days just remember to avoid traffic lines/traffic dots and don't lean too far over in the corners. sounds like a plan. do it.
what kind of bike are we talking about?

My only bike- the Jamis Nova cyclocross I bought. I have a rack on the back w/ a Arkel Tailwind on it, and I have one small pannier back I can throw on there too, but I usually just have my backpack. Don't ask why I didn't get a set of panniers and just one though. . . I'm retarded is the answer to that question

oh also
btw- the Jamis has road tires on it- not knobbys. I destroyed the knobbys when I first got the bike somehow and needed replacement tires withing two weeks of getting the bike.

This isn't an easy challenge for me btw- it's @%!#$ hard to get up the hills going to work and it's worse going home with other hills and in to the wind.
I also need to go slowly because there's no shower at work, just my hidden stack of baby wipes in my drawer.

Riding in SF without sweating. Right. Don't forget my old commuting trick, affix yourself to a bus as often as possible...and watch out for the mean bus drivers.

Personally, I would bail on rain days (too dangerous) and just continue the challenge into June to account for the number of days you missed due to weather. Otherwise, I say go for it. Although, just speaking as a former HR person who's had to talk to many an IT guy about their "personal hygiene," you might want to consider stashing some deodorant in your desk. (You know it's ALWAYS the IT guy. Don't front.)

definitely follow the deodorant advice. good call, sis! and i seriously doubt we'll get more rain...i mean we need it but my god, we've had only about 1 inch all damn year. but in the event of rain, i'd bail and do the makeups in june as my back-stabbing twin suggests. (don't think i'm letting the robot mural thing go so easily, ang2.)

Nice Kenneth. I wish I could ride to work. I look forward to seeing your progress. I agree with Angie, you should bail on rain days. There won't be many.
