Quick DVD Roundup 6/27

Tagged as: ,

Well, I'm way behind on my movie write ups. I need another guest column from my secret columnist. It's not that I haven't been watching movies, it's just that I haven't really liked any of them.

Superman Returns - *

Superman Returns and I almost fall asleep. A for effort, but I just didn't like the story. And that kid? There seemed to be a bit too much going on in this.

King Kong - **

The "first reel" is good- especially all the malarky on Skull Island (once they get there of course) but the rest falls flat. I still think it's odd that the director of Meet The Feebles gets huge budgets now. But if he could do Meet the Feebles and that Sumatran Rat Monkey movie on a tight budget then he can deliver a flick. I just didn't like this one.

16 Blocks - **

I thought the ending was a bit corny, but liked the inclusion of the commentary and original ending on the DVD - shows why they went that route. Not a bad movie for what it was. It's kind of difficult to tell a story and tell the audience about the "reveal" up front and keep the story going, but they did it. Not wow-inspiring but entertaining for a bit.

Long Way Round - ***

It's hard for me to be objective about this kind of movie. As a movie- strictly speaking (it's really a documentary split up for TV) - it's barely three stars, but as a Kenny-jealousy-dream it's 4 or 5 asterisks.

I love stories like this- mostly because I'd love to do something like this - although a much more watered down US or Latin American version. Plus- I'd have to really learn how to ride a motorcycle (legally). But I can't do that because, 1)I'm a wuss and 2)my mom would beat me if she found out I got on a motorcycle (see also, #1). Interesting video- the part about them whining about not getting the bikes they wanted and some other bits seems forced, but otherwise a good view.

The Shield - ****

One thing I have been trying to watch is episodes of The Shield. Kevin loaned me Season 1 a while back. I'm slowly working through Season 2 now. Fun show.

Dogtown and Z-Boys- ***

While not as refined or pretty as Riding Giants, this is a pretty good documentary. Reminds me of dropping Adam and his bones brigade crew off at the drainage ditches in SA in the ol' diesel rabbit (until he got his license of course).

Speaking of-- here's Adam in H-town w/ Paul. I wish he pulled a Bert on this but alas it's still cool:-- (actually, doing a Bert on a long board and wall that high may be hard)
