DVD Roundup 9/16
Man, the DVD sadness continues. I've gotten a bit more used to cable being a timesuck, but when I went to look up my queue history for this month I realized I still don't have much to "round up". But even with the lack of quantity, I do have some quality picks.
You have to remember, that I don't list movies on the blog that I think are "no stars" or are a waste of time - or as they say in Spinal Tap, "shit sandwich". And yes, I understand that it's still very subjective. But hey, that's why you're reading this. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada - ***
It's probably a bit slow-paced for most of you, but this melancholy dark-comedy was really good for me. The beauty about it is that you could read whatever you want into the movie. Things like "Oh hey, that guy is like Odysseus, no wait, more like the character from Dante's Inferno." Sure, it's not perfect, but I liked it a lot. But maybe I'm a biased Texan. Underworld: Evolution - *
A for effort, but this wasn't that good. The star is really only for Kate Beckinsale's belly button and leather pants. It's a bad flick. It'd take me more time to explain the plot than the actual length of the movie. And it even has Derek Jacoby in it! His grandkids' college fund film perhaps. Running Scared - **
Another A for effort movie. I thought this was a really good idea, and in hindsight, yeah you can figure out the overall mystery, but I thought it could've been tightened up a bit more. I didn't like the neon-hockey rink, and the ending, but the main story idea kept me watching. I also liked the subplot with the wife helping out. . . Ultraviolet - *
I really wanted to like this, but alas, I didn't. I like the director (he made Equilibrium). The kid in this is the same kid from Running Scared, which confused me a bit. Had promise, but it made no sense. I have no idea why I gave it one star either. And yes, there were worse movies that this in my queue this month. . . and this is crap! The Matador - ****
Great flick. Everyone in this was good (there's not a huge cast) and the story was great. Even the ending was good. It's my recommendation of the month. It's macho enough to get people to watch it "Hey! A movie about a hitman!" but the story turns from that subject and uses the characters and stories to keep you watching through the few plot twists. One other note- I love IMDB. I went to look up Vice Squad the other day after watching it on cable (a great 80s flick) and saw a funny comment on the site. Someone asked who'd win in a fight, Ramrod or Waingro. I cracked up that 1) people think of stuff like that (that aren't 11 years old) and 2) that I knew what they were asking about and had an answer in my head almost as soon as I had read the question. Speaking of Vice Squad, Wings Hauser looks *exactly* like his son, Cole (from Pitch Black). Or vice versa really.
