The Week - Minor Rant
I have a love/hate relationship with the magazine, The Week. It's a magazine I get every Friday and it kind of recaps the week's news from other magazines and newspapers.
1. It seems to use the same sources to an annoying degree.
Slate and The San Francisco Chronicle shouldn't be used in so many news stories. 2. It seems pre-aged upon arrival.
Hey, I understand this is a world where we get our news instantly and online or via phones, but the advantage of paper media is that it can reprint and in more-depth the news or editorials from the past seven days. The Week doesn't seem to do that, they're very clipped and rarely reprint an entire editorial. 3. Style
I mean this in terms of style sheets, or the style book. Anyone who took Ms. Norman's class knows what I'm talking about. The Week, when quoting web sites, uses the preposition in instead of on.
Example: All in all, said Roger Simon in politico.com.
Maybe it's a regional thing, but everyone I know says and writes "Roger Simon said XYZ on politico.com".
But if Roger worked for a newspaper, we'd say/write we read his quote in The Daily Planet . . . The Week's not horrible though, I may renew my subscription. And to be honest, I give subscriptions to it away to my family members. As Adam Schwartzman said in kenneths.org, "You're right, it's a perfect read for the crapper." I'll add a fourth item since I'm on a roll- The Week also added a slight bit of celebrity and gossip content. It sucks.
