The Top 9 Double Bass Drum Players and Songs
I was recently reading an inspired blog post about dying with a cactus and got to thinking about blogs and music. And then after settling another unrelated argument about music I thought about making a blog post about it. But- you know what? I realized I didn't have my post in list form. People these days only read your blogs if you have a list, preferably in the form of a top 5 or top 10. So, without further ado, here's my
Top 9 Double Bass Drum Songs and/or Drummers.
Why top 9? Because that's 3 triplets mofugga! Now go practice your paradiddles #9 Lars - Metallica - One
although I'm tempted to not link anything related to Metallica
Arrrrr mp3 baddddddd
There may be better examples (Leper Messiah, etc.. .), but One always stands out (stands out for it's crappy production too) #8 Niko McBain - Iron Maiden
The dude's so badass he only needs one pedal to outplay most of the double-pedal users. (this probably isn't the best example either)
#7 Tim Herb Alexander- Primus
Wynona's Big Brown Beaver
Love the costumes . . .
#6 Simon Phillips - Big Country, Pete Townsend
I needed a "new wave" guy on the list, and I can't remember The Honorable Tony Thompson using a double bass in Power Station's Some Like it Hot or Get it On
#5 Tommy Aldridge - Whitesnake, Ozzy
I'll probably get crap for not having him listed higher on this list and more crap for not linking to In the Still of the Night but look-- he doesn't need sticks!
#4 Danny Carey - Tool
Schism
#3 Lee Kerslake - Ozzy
double bass rocking during Crazy Train ftw!
too bad about his royalty lawsuits
#2 Neil Peart - Rush - Various
Maybe not the best example below but I like this song more than the YYZ solo (http://youtube.com/watch?v=kJRF0hD5TPQ) thanks to high school marching band. . .
#1 Eddie Van Halen - Van Halen- Hot For Teacher
The quintessential double-bass song
(and current news trend for Florida educators. . .)
And Martin explains how Hot For Teacher is possibly a derivative of Simon Phillips work (at the end) not sure if that's true or not . . . . honorable mentions:
Tommy Lee's drum cage solo (honk honk!!)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=WURSJ4ZDYKM
I remember Wild Side's "bell" thing more than any double-bass in Motley Crue Songs so to the honorable mentions he goes. . . Jon Bonham
supposedly used a "triple" pedal trick on Good Times, Bad Times
This is the equivalent of saying "Mine goes to 11" for drummers Ginger Baker
one of the first rockers to get into using the double bass drums . . . but who wants to listen to Sunshine of Your Love? Right. No one. Jimmy Chamberlain (Smashing Pumpkins) - I am One
Just because I like the song and I couldn't find a cool video of Carl Palmer playing on the beach in the Canary Islands
And this guy plays double bass in the middle of his solo. 12 May 22:01 | /rants_and_raves | 9 comment(s)
